980ti or 1070?

So I'm looking to buy a new gpu. Since the 980ti and the 1070 are very similar in peroformance i can't really decide between the two. Here, a used 980ti costs 300 pounds, while a 1070 costs more than 400. I'm looking to keep the card for at least a year before i upgrade.

I personally would say the 1070, that way you won't have to upgrade for another 2 years.

There is around 10fps difference between 2 cards actually. If you can I would invest 100 pounds more to be more future proofed

If you are oging to keep it for only a year the 980 ti should do, its cheaper and offers 6Gb of Vram which is alot,

You can get any card for a year and not have to upgrade. Be more specific in what you want.

You won't ever have to upgrade, without context of course.

 

When you start noticing that your performance is lower than you'd like is when you might want to look into upgrading.

and you want to upgrade about one year after so then DX12 will be ubiquitous

those are 1440p benchmarks. At 1080p they're very close.

This is why you shouldn't listen to people giving out blunt, simple responses without specifics in something like this.

 

Nobody knows when a video card is going to become "obsolete", but you can look at previous video card benchmarks and compare them to the ones that replaced them and compare. What also matters is what resolution you play at, if you use VR, what games you play, etc.

Luckily I don't play super demanding games. But I like them to look nice, I'll upgrade when Volta comes, if pascal refresh is next... Fuck off Nvidia I guess I'm buying vega.

depending for what are you upgrading for... if you fotoedit and render a lot, get 980ti, its more aimed for these kind of things because it has more cuda cores (actually it has 200 cores less than titan x maxwell + on gaming, you dont need that much, also you saw those benchmarks that 1070 beats 980ti on gaming) but if you're a gamer, get 1070, its faster and newer with 16nm vs 28nm... But i would get the 980ti even if i wont going to render because its a pretty good deal for its price (here on amazon, they sells for 700-1000€ so imagine)

If you plan to overclock, the 980 Ti will pull ahead if you manage to get it to 1.5GHz (which most will do). If you don't plan to overclock, the 1070 will be faster at stock clocks.

 

The 1070 uses less power, roughly 50-75W.

 

The 980 Ti is better for rendering / work tasks as it has more CUDA cores. For me though, the 980 Ti is faster than the 1070, both overclocked, 1.5GHz on the 980 Ti and 2.1Ghz on the 1070. I paid $350 for the 980 Ti used (back in the summer, it was a good deal) and $330 for the 1070 used. I'd actually say if I had paid more for the 1070, I'd be upset.

 

In everything I do, the 980 Ti seems to pull ahead, whether it's modeling or gaming (I only have a very limited amount of games since I don't game much though). I think the only benchmark I had the 1070 win in was 3Dmark, but by a very slim margin...

 

I do own both cards still, the 980 Ti is in my server for rendering and the 1070 in my PC because I sadly can't use it to render (no iray rendering support yet).

my EVGA 980 Ti Kingpin edition died on me on Friday while sending a damn email from chrome. I have another dead one lying behind me. I ordered the Asus GTX 1070 Strix (was $15 more than the cheapest one I could find) this morning, will see how it performs once it arrives, however I already like that it does not consume as much power according to reviews.

 

The Note that I'm leaving, people love saying that EVGA has the best support, however the reason their support is so great is because they know their cards give in after a short damn while (been a GTX 980 with Vram issues, a 980 with fan issues and now the two dead 980 Ti's) Luckily they were given to me and I didn't pay for them since their so called support is not so great in South Africa, however it really is bad advertising for them. (though I believe it could be the reason EVGA doesn't sell much in South Africa would be our climate)

Most benchmarks are done at stock, the 980Ti overclocks really well, you can have the same performance of a stock 1070 with it, if you find a good used one for a cheap price that makes it worth I would say the 980Ti especially if you don't plan going 4k yet.

 

I am more than fine with my Titan X, especially because my resolution is 2560x1080p, I will stick to it until  the gtx 1180 hits the market and I finally decide to go 4k.

Wow 100 pounds for 10 FPS.... Not worth it considering the 980ti has way more cuda cores

That's prolly at stick a 980ti at 1450 would be just under a 1080

Stop generalizing that having more CUDA cores is better/faster for rendering and the 1070 is only faster when you compare reference vs reference.

If the 980 Ti come with great cooler, grab that unless 80w-100w more will blow up your utility bill.

Keep in mind if those are all stock cards, that's why the difference is so big.

 

The 980 TI has W A Y more to gain from overclocking than the 1070 does.

So a GBP400($500) card  is better value than a GBP300($375) when they both perform similar although the more expensive card use slightly less power which you probably wont notice in your utility bill?

I'm reffering to the 1070 as the better value card, its the cheaper one. #ReadingSkillsOnPoint
