Capacitive or Captive?

I always thought they were CA PA CI TIVE  thumbscrews which makes infinitely more sense. Kyle from AwesomeSauce/Bitwit always says CAP TIVE but I thought he just had a bad habit. I just heard Dmitri from HWC say it too and now I feel we must solve this once and for all. Captive or Capacitive?

they're captive, if you're talking about things like thumb screws on cases

I think it's captive as captive is something (usually a person) held somewhere (as captive thumbscrews are held in to the side panel) where capacitive is "the property of being able to collect and hold a charge of electricity."

For what? Capacitors are capacitive (your skin is as well). Thumb screws that don't leave the side panel when you take them off are captive.

Captive.  Capacitive has to do with touchscreens and electrical engineering not holding a thumbscrew onto a side panel.

Okay well that was fast. I was misunderstanding what capacitive means I suppose, though I do stand by my opinion that "captive" is not a word we should use for screws. They are not being held hostage...

They are, you're not letting them leave the side panel. You're essentially restraining their freedom.

They are, however, confined to the holes they are in.

Look under adjective not noun because captive, when describing something ex. "captive thumbscrews," means imprisoned or confined as in confined to the holes in the side panel or imprisoned by the side panel.

I feel we should be starting a campaign to free the poor oppressed thumbscrews from the control of the oppressive patriarchy that is the evil side panels.

Maybe a change.org?

Down with the evil side panels.

This... Is not going to end well.

I have this image of a newly freed thumbscrew lying down in the street to block the path of a side panel driving a tank.
