Did linus ever do this ??

Did linus ever make a video guide on how to buy a great gaming screen? what to look for, Hz,  color, response time,  size, resolution. etc.  etc.  can't find that video.

Agreed.  my brother is looking for a 1080p monitor with great framerate and color, since the other one he bought has bad colors. and we can't seem to make full sense of it all.

His other screen is a 23.5 inch Eizo or something like that. not a big brand.

This one unfortunately says nothing about different types of screens oled lcd led plasma etc. or anything regarding color. I'd love a full video guide on what to look for when buying a great gaming screen. fx. if colors are important then what to look for. if input lag is important then what to look for.

Just dont get TN and try to not get VA (unless you cant afford IPS) and u will be fine. There is a tech quickie for different display types but cant be bothered to find it because im on phone.

hello!

is it me you're looking for?

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Stick to the brands you know, Tbh I've had exceptional results with Asus's line of IPS LED's which run about $125 on amazon for a 22" (class) model. The only complaints people have about them are they have a relatively weak stand, but I fixed that with a VESA Clamp mount for my desk which only ran me another $45

Looking at screen tech is like dropping down the rabbit hole.  Many brands, specs, etc. out there, and each manufacture likes to come up with their own terminology on stuff to boot.

Best route is to figure out what you want from a monitor then get a list of monitors with those features, and then start researching up reviews on them.

Some to keep an eye out for is the few used Overlord monitors floating about, QNIX monitors, etc.

Before anyone gets on me for exceptions, these are generalizations and not true of every display in a catagory.

Types of screens:

CRT: old tube monitors. Pros: Great black levels, great refresh rates, low persistence Cons: heavy, big, loud, expensive, bad color reproduction, low resolution.

Plasma: uses ionized gas to create light. Pros: Great black levels, great refresh rates, low persistence, great color reproduction, great brightness Cons: low density means big displays, screen burn in, expensive, high power use.

DLP: modern projectors. Pros: Good black levels, good color reproduction, great brightness in dark rooms.  Cons: awful brightness in bright rooms, low refresh rate, high persistence, expensive, high input lag

LCD: most common tech. Falls into several catagories based on lighting and panel type.

   Lighting:

CFC: old school LCD. used a CFC lamp as a backlight. Bad color reproduction, high power use, large, heavy, just bad.

LED: currently most common. Uses a blue LED with a yellow color filter to produce light. Cheaper, smaller, lighter, lower power use, but still not true white so requires expensive filtering in the panel to get accurate colors.

Quantum Dot: Uses a blue LED with a Quantum Dot layer that absorbs and reprojects the light as pure white. Cheaper, and much easier to make accurate colors cheaply but more expensive BOM than a yellow tint filter.

   Panels:

TN: oldest panel tech. Has best contrast ratio, input lag, and refresh rates but crappy color reproduction and viewing angles.

VA: half way between TN and IPS. A lot of current quantum dot displays are VA because the quantum dot layer fixes a bunch of the color, brightness issues with VA compared to TN while keeping better refresh rates than IPS and better viewing angles than TN.

IPS: has best viewing angles and color reproduction, but not as good contrast ratio, input lag, and refresh rates. Getting closer and closer every year as it's improved though.

[End of LCD]

OLED: not to be confused with "LED" LCDs. Use little organic lights to create an image. Pros: great color reproduction, great contrast ratios, thinner, lighter, less power consumption, nearly no power consumption for black, amazing refresh rates and persistence (a lot of AMOLED panels can in 1000hz+ of refresh) Cons: expensive as fuck, not very good lifespan, and wear across the screen unevenly resulting in a filmy grain in the image over long periods of use.

QLED: not to be confused with Quantum Dot LCDs. Use small groups of quantum dots to generate light in the same way as an OLED screen. Pros: everything good from OLED, plus cheaper mass production, cheaper big panels, *MUCH* better lifespans, less grainy wear because of the increased durability, and brighter peak brightness. Cons: not on the market yet and ridiculous research costs will lead to insane prices for the first few years.
