I've had various networking gear die on me, all due to temperatures.

Add a fan to cool the innards of your consumer grade stuff and they should last a while longer.

Cooling my gigabit network switch I found in the junk pile at my dads work managed to make it stable again

Can always flash bad firmware to an unsecured router, that will likely kill it unless it has a boot ROM for recovery that can't be flashed over.

If you are worried then restart it. That should give you a fresh IP address if someone managed to get hold of yours, but the most they could really do is flood your connection unless you have an open and un-secured router.

They won't be able to physically destroy the chips. But if they get root access to your router, they could flash bad firmware which could brick the router.

Some routers can recover from a bad firmware flash. Others cannot. Depends on the model.
