Comcast internet speeds varying GREATLY

Right now I am paying for 100 MBPS download and managed to strike a deal with Comcast on the phone while moving to our new place. While moving I called Comcast to move the service from my old place to the new one, they offered twice the speed (200 MBPS) for the same price I was paying (for 100 MBPS). I happily thanked and accepted that offer.

Now that I'm here and I am experiencing the new 'speed', I am heavily disappointed. I get anywhere from 0.20 to 80 MBPS using ethernet using speedtest.net (I cannot tell why, I have not found a pattern or reason)

My phone gets ~15-30 MBPS but I haven't toyed too much with it and it is on the 2.4 GHz wireless network, not the 5 GHz (we have a dual band router).

First, to dip as low as 0.20 MBPS is shameful when I am supposed to get 200 MBPS.

Second, 80 MBPS (max download speed I ever got on a speed test at my new place) isn't even half of what I am supposed to be getting!

Here is how I set up my internet, I live a condo and there are little female coaxial ports in the walls. I got a coaxial cable from Best Buy and plugged that into my modem, used the included ethernet wire to plug in my router to the modem then used another Best Buy ethernet cable from my router to my computer a few feet away. Afterward, I just called Comcast to give us the internet and they did. Have not called them since.

How many devices other than your phone and your PC do you have? It may be also possible that your ISP is throttling you.

How long have you stayed in your condo with this "New" connection? Also, what type of Ethernet cables did you get?

ThioJoe (he makes real videos now, but this was on his real channel while his main channel was fake) made a great video you might want to look into.

Just started and I have no idea which ethernet cables I got, I was on a time crunch at new years eve and I got whatever I got my hands on quickly since I had to attend a party.

so it was pre wired i take it the cable wire to you  ?  if your modem takes coaxial if you know where the other end goes run your own cable wire to it and see if the speeds are better/stable if they are the line going to your condo is bad . have them pull it out and replace it . if not then its on comcast end report them to fcc and wait for them to have to respond .

when i mean run your own temp one thats not from the wall to the modem its from where your line comes into the building to you thur the wire running thur the wall . if your silly far from the utility termination point then just complain to the condo people and comcast . have  you ruled out the ethernet cables, modem ,router ,ect as being the bad part already?

Alright the ethernet cable I run from my router to my main computer is this one right here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-14-cat-6-network-cable-gray/6234011.p?skuId=6234011

I am 99% sure it is this one.

Wireless works similarly - bad. Modem/Router worked perfectly fine in my other location. I have no idea where the coaxial cable goes since it goes through a ton of walls.

That  should get you in to your modems webpage. This can display a lot of info. My guess is you have signal issues. Your signal page should look something similar to this:

Your power level on your Downstream should be between -15 and 15. The closer to 0 the better. The Upstream should be below 55. I would say the high 30s is better. But it also can get too low.  If your modem is running out of spec that could cause issues. Ive had issues where I would run enough in spec to get some of my downstream and upstream channels but not all. Remember DOCSIS 3.0 and above relies on channel bonding to get better speeds. Another issue, is the modem might not be compatible with the speed tier OR Comcast has failed to provision the modem properly. Another issue could be an over loaded node. If this is the case, your FUCKED. This would require Comcast to split the node. While they do, do this, it could take months for them to fix the issue.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

then its either the wire coming to you or comcast being comcast and screwing with their customers . i  am aim for the wire . you need to find out who would replace that ,condo owner or comcast . i would think it would be the condo people . i hope they are good/happy to run a new line for you , if they do have them use exterior Coaxial wire or heavy duty type

Just noticed the white text at the bottom. I'm not sure where to find those channel values with a net gear router. I'm fairly familiar with the router manager as I've portforwarded before however I still cannot find the channel values. I found some statistic thing though!

Thats because the ip address I gave you should have gotten you in to the Modem's config page. Unless you got a modem router combo. Then that case it might be different. I use a standard modem with no router built in because they suck ass. Also, if your renting your modem from Comcast, I would suggest buying one out right. It will pay it self off in a year or a little over a year and save you $10 a month that you dont have to give to those bastards.

With out knowing your signals then your not going to easily find the problem. The only other advice I can give you, is locate where the wire from the pole or underground enters your home. Around that point should be a 2 way splitter, make sure all of your connection are tight. Also, you need to be sure the modem it directly connected to that 2 way splitter. For example, we have 1 cable modem and 2 TVs with cable. I have a two way splitter that connects to a line coming in. One side of the splitter does the modem, then next side is connected to another two way splitter that feeds the TV's. Cable boxes dont need as good of a signal to work.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I have the coaxial cable go directly from a wall port in my room to the modem here. I do not have cable TV on the plan nor a TV yet (waiting till after CES to browse), I plan to just get another coaxial cable and attach it from the wall to the TV in the living room. No idea if we rent the modem, I will get back to you on that. As for the IP you gave me... should i screenshot it and put it here or censor stuff? Power level is in between 8.4-9.7

Well It shouldnt show any info that should be censored. Just make sure no IP addresses are visible. As far as your downstream is concerned, its a little on the hot side. I know out side temperature can affect the signal. But Im not exactly how sure. For example my upstream power gets up in the 50s in the summer time and stays in the high 40s range in the winter time.

You can go here to compare your signals: https://www.dslreports.com/faq/5862

If your just with in the limits you could have small fluctuations that take you out of spec. If your well in spec then its a possibility it could be an issue on Comcast's end.
