Underwhelming performance from my 1080

I recently upgraded from a 970 to a 1080 and i seem to be having the same issues as before. i.e in GTA V i keep dipping in high 30s with Nvidia's settings, same issues with Overwatch (Everything Ultra except shadows and fog detail with 100% render scale). I can keep 144 fps in most of the time but sometimes it dips in the mid 80s. I was having these issues with my 970 aswell (except i was using slightly lower settings). While gaming my CPU stays aroung 97-99% load while the 1080 jumps from 60-90% load.

The 4690K is bottlenecking the GTX 1080. This is affecting your minimum FPS. Upgrade to a 4790K (or 6700K or 5820K/6800K)

Check temps as mentioned and try a complete graphics driver uninstall with DDU and reinstall them fresh. I've had strange things happen (ie: GPU clocks not downclocking) that were often fixed with DDU + reinstall. I'm doubtful its a CPU bottleneck because I myself have a 4690S (lower-clocked locked 4690) paired with a GTX 1080 and I've never seen CPU bottleneck situations where the CPU is pinned at 100% and the GPU is fluctuating.

 

Recent games I have played at 1440p and not observed a CPU bottleneck are: Overwatch, Shadow Warrior (FPS is constantly 200+, haven't checked CPU usage), Shadow Warrior 2 (~90FPS with max settings + 150% resolution scale), Witcher 3 (most demanding scenario was 100% CPU usage + 99% GPU usage, no GPU usage dips), Metro 2033 Redux, Metro Last Light Redux.

Even a 5820K/5930K (at stock) is bottlenecking the GTX 1080.

I'm a bit hesitant on OCing since last time I did my PSU died (to be fair it probably wasn't because of that but you never know)

Temps are good (read above), what're your settings for OW? That seems to be the worst in terms of performance for me

I just tried out one long game of Overwatch (haven't played in 2 months) and my FPS was a constant 110-132 FPS (I have my FPS cap set to 142). Gameplay was 100% smooth so I didn't constantly monitor CPU/GPU usage.

 

The settings used:

 

Resolution: 2560x1440 (165 Hz)

Render Scale: 100%

All graphics quality settings maxed, except Local Fog Detail (Low)

 

I left out settings that were likely irrelevant. If there's any setting you need, let me know.

Been there, had a 4690k. Upgraded to a 4790k and all the problems went away.

 

If you haven't already you can try overclocking your RAM. Can help in situations like this.

I bought my 4690k off of ebay. I dont blame you there because the processor was a couple days late and I was nervous if it worked when I put my pc together 3 months ago. But, if you dont want to dish out 230 dollars then overclock it as much as you can with some temp room.

I have a 4690k oc'd to 4.3ghz with 2x 980 ti's.  I must have a super bottleneck.  I sure dont feel it with a g-sync monitor.

You have a bottleneck. 

 

Play Fallout 4 with the shadow distance and God Rays on ultra. There you will find your bottleneck.

Thanks, I think I'll just OC and lower some intense settings a little and see how that goes

Oc U the cpu u will be fine if ur drops to 30 are when ur driving around its load times off of the hdd

iv seen people running 2 maxwell titans on a 4690k overclocked and they have been fine 

ur cpu will last u at least another 3 year if u oc 

if ur cpu was obseleat so would the 6600k 

do some overclocking 

u can run 4.4 on the stock cooler at 1.260v and ul be fine
