What's a good FM2 processor stronger than an A8 5500

monk3y

I have an A8 and it sucks, it's super weak. Is there anything better that can actually run modern games at a decent FPS without being in the lowest settings or should I upgrade my mobo entirely.

Is there a chance that the motherboard has the FM2+ socket?

If not then a system upgrade is the way to go.

X4 760k might be better but I don't know if it is worth it

It does not. It's old and I refuse to upgrade out of fear of losing data.

You won't lose data, all you need to do is buy a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. You can keep the other stuff until you see they need an upgrade.

You won't lose any data.

my friend literally gave his system an overhaul (he did it at my house) over the weekend, and his Windows 10 and all his data is still there.

All we had to do was uninstall any old AMD drivers, and install the new Intel / Gigabyte ones -- he may need to enter in his Windows 10 key again.

We even tested out GS:GO and Rise of the Tomb Raider -- that was already on his drive.

  • AMD Phenom II X4 955 >> Intel i3-6100
  • Gigabyte 870 motherboard >> Gigabyte Z170 HD3 (yeah yeah, Z170 motherboard for a locked CPU. It was cheaper than a non-Z motherboard that he wanted)
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM >> 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • Radeon HD 6850 (dying) >> RX-470

What motherboard are you currently using?

You don't have much choices with FM2 since it has already been replaced by FM2+ (and soon AM4).

You MAY be able to get an FM2+ chip to work on your motherboard -- we will need to know what board you have.

On the FM2 socket, strictly, the best you can get is either one of these (you may or may not need to look into the used market):

  • Athlon 760K, Quad-Core, 3.8 GHz (APU without the built-in GPU)
  • A10-6800K, Quad-Core, 4.1 GHz
  • A10-6790K, Quad-Core, 4.0 GHz
  • A10-6700, Quad-Core, 3.7 GHz
  • A8-6600K, Quad-Core, 3.9 GHz -- same as the A10s, but a weaker built-in GPU
