Gtx 1060 or 970

javamaster10000

Hello there,
it seems like my old but trusty gtx 960 finally quit it's job.

So the time has come for a new gpu. Right now I would like to spend about 250-300€ (Euros). Right now I am looking at a GTX1060 or a GTX970. The prices I am seeing on 1060s with 6gb of memory are around 250 - 300 €. The 970 seems to bee performing marginaly better, but I am looking at this: http://www.mediamarkt.de/de/product/_gigabyte-geforce-gtx-970-xtreme-gaming-oc-edition-2129530.html#technische-daten. A very respectable German warehouse is selling a Gigabyte GTX 970 for just 222€, which sounds like a steal, as even palit gtx970 start at 250€ at other sellers.

Now to my main question: Are there any major drawbacks from buying a last gen card like the 970, expecially when looking at 1080p gaming?

Or should I even take a look over the fence to the red team of things?

Thanks for all your replies, as you have allready helped me identifying the GPU as the broken part of my computer!

970 is quite a bit slower than the 6GB 1060. Get the 1060 over the 970, though I'd still choose an RX 480 over a GTX 1060 as the RX 480 turned out to be better on average after recent driver updates.

I would recommend the GTX 1060, as it is

  1. More efficient
  2. As fast as a 980
  3. More vRAM (The 970 doesn't have full 4GBs)

As for the RX 480, depends on which games you play, most 2015 titles perform much better on the GTX 1060 (espcially GTA V and Overwatch), whereas most DX12/Vulkan titles perform much better on the RX 480

Out of those, the 1060 6gb. But I would at least look at AIB 480 cards like the 480 Sapphire Nitro since it could be found at that price, basically match or almost match the 1060 6gb and outperform it on DX12 titles.

But if you don't wanna mess with AMD the 1060 6gb it's just a lot better than the 970 which was fine on it's day but has served is purpose imho.

Those are all Nvidia optimized games. AMD optimized DX11 games perform better on the RX 480. Overall though the RX 480 is better

I don't think that many people keep a low end GPU (like the RX 480 and the GTX 1060) for more than 2 years....

Even the 3 GB GTX 1060 will perform just as well or better than 970, no to mention that 1060 is way more efficient card to run.

I would also add "and how much you would like to get for your old card."

Because the 1060, only being better with 'older' games, will probably have lower resale value, especially given the common belief that Nvidia isn't great about supporting their older products.

Most of this sounds comprehendable, but it is the price I am thinking about. The 970 is about 80 bugs cheaper than a considerable 1060. Is the 1060 worth 80 bugs more than a 970?

If you cannot afford the extra $80 then get the 970.  It's still a good card, just not for much longer.

If you can swing the extra money then you need to consider either the 1060 or the 480.

I had to return my RX 480 for a GTX 1060 due to artificating issues with older OpenGl stuff which is from AMD's drivers that has apparently been an issue since the Fury launch. "Overall better"  is highly subjective.  Best advice would be to get the 480 if all you care for are new titles and the 1060 if want to enjoy the older stuff.

A GTX 660 shouldn't be providing a better experience in something older using openGL over an RX 480. Switching to red again after awhile and back reminded me how derp AMD drivers are.
