Game Downloads- Give HDD a rest at some point?

harrisonjr98

Is there anything wrong with leaving my new rig on for a couple days to download the over 100 games (1.5TB) of my steam library? I just started the download tonight. Should I give it a break at a certain point to prevent the hard drive from writing for that long? My network bandwidth is not an issue - just worried leaving a drive to write for such a long time might somehow be bad. Thoughts?

I have no idea if it's healthy for the drive or not. I'll be honest about that.

What I would do to be safe is just to download couple a games/night or day..
Install the ones you play the most first ofcourse :P

As long as it's properly cooled and not being shaken, it'll be fine.

Won't hurt it at all. Download them all.

It's fine and a great idea. Kind of a "burn in" for the new drive. If continuous operation was going to kill it, you'd probably want to know right away rather than after six months, right? So yeah, do this. While you're at it, set it to read something that huge too.

If there is anything that is going to wear out the drive it's turning it on and off, making it spin up and down.

Leaving it on won't be as much of a strain. It will be fine.

^ That was on my mind too. Using electronics the way they are designed to be used doesn't matter. No hard drive will wore out if you use it at 100% for long periods. No fan will die if it runs at 100% speed all the time. No CPU will die faster if its constantly at 100%. Heat is the problematic thing. It will wore out stuff. And since friction causes heating, having some cool air going over your drives will help.
