Should I wait for DDR4?

Go to solution Solved by Dim,

Depends; can you wait?

If you don't need it right this second, then there's no reason not to wait. Technology only gets cheaper/better the longer you wait. Conversely, RAM isn't a huge bottleneck at the moment, so personally it doesn't phase me.

The only thing I should add is, don't underestimate what the costs for DDR4 RAM will be.

So my plans of getting an x79 and 4930k might change.Because of DDR4.

Is it worth waiting?4 slots will be able to achieve 256GB(on Haswell-E),and 2 slots will achieve 128GB(on Broadwell/Haswell Refresh/Skylake),2x the times x79 can hold!Renders a x79 machine powerless in an instant. Thus, should I wait? This make the x79 seems to be not worth it at all, because you only need to wait a few months to get something that absolutely destroy the other.

The main thing i am worried about is Haswell Refresh having DDR4,which the 5770K will then be a good choice.Because that is nearest to now that will be released.i am willing to Delid for DDR4 btw.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you willing to pay for 256GB DDR4 though? that's probably gonna cost more than your CPU.

Most likely more than the CPU, motherboard AND graphics card..

the only thing I'm excited for about DDR4 is the performance increase APUs will be getting. not really worth waiting for right now though.

Ddr4 could be a ling wait ddr3 still hasnt nearly hit its max....so yeah

Sent from my future spaceship

Besides I forgot to mention some X79 boards support up to 128 gigs of ram already so there is no need to really wait even if some voodoo magic happens requiring 128 gigs of ram for most tasks.

I have 8 gigs and I never use more than 50%.... Ok to be fair I don't really do much heavy multitasking, but still, why on earth would you need 128-256 gigs of RAM?

also remember haswell E will have 8 core versions of the CPU's so not only ddr4 but  2 additional cores.. but unless you desperately need to upgrade dont.. im currently waiting mainly because my system still does everything i need it too  and quite well. i will wait to see what intel and amd has to offer for 2014/15 and then make an informed descision

i also don't think the haswell refresh will support ddr4 they probably wont even change the chipset do an amd and retain the old one , broadwell-K is slated for q4 next year that is probably what they are saving the z97 chipset for hopefully they removed the voltage regulator back off the cpu with broadwell

Those x79 motherboards only support 128GB when using E5 and Buffered Dimms. There will never be 16GB DDR3 modules.

Well, if you are willing to go with 128 gb of ram pricing shouldn't be much of a problem? http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=D3-16R16GS

It is ECC Registered, and you will need a C602/C602J/C604/C606 motherboard and Xeon E5 to use it.
