I was particularily taken by your 3rd argument. It was very convincing, and dare I say, quite moving as well.

But seriously yes, it would be a massive upgrade. Defiantly worth it in everything that you do.

Probably. Might also be worth seeing how AMD's Zen does. Might be pretty compelling as well.

why not to x99 6-core since pricing is similar but there's the extra 2 core and 4 thread?

^ Id only go for the 7700k if gaming was more of the focus which it dosn't appear to be. X99 All the way for your kinda work

Zen maybe too... supposed to be about like getting the 6900k for the price of a 6800k, maybe it will live up to the hype. Still hearing Jan-Feb last I checked.

It would be a huge upgrade, but I would wait for AMD Zen, even if you prefer Intel, they might low the cost if the Zen is very good

Hi,

I'm currently using an i5-3570k and I think it's holding me back a lot in terms of virtual machine performance. I do Web and Android development in a Xubuntu VM, and with only 2 cores assigned to it it can get quite sluggish. I also do  plenty of encryption, some gaming and the occasional Premiere & Photoshop.

Do you guys think the i7-7700k is going to be a worthwile upgrade? That would imply changing my mobo and RAM as well, so I want to make sure it would be worth it.

Thanks!

yes.

An i5, even a 6600k wont be good enough these days. A 1070 paired with a 6600k is already showing signs of bottlenecking (90-100% CPU utilisation in games). An i7 may just be a quad core, but hyperthreading allows for another 20-30% higher performance increase EVEN in games just using 4 threads/cores (because of more effective usage of cores/threads vs background processes).

Or with the money Intel charges you for a 7700k buy a 6 or 8 core zen :D

I am definitely open to AMD if they can produce CPUs that are not inferior to Intel's. I already intend on considering Zen when it comes out.

Tmw we will see it perform. It's 4 core variant is rumored to perform a tiny bit better then kaby lake at a price tag of $150

If VM is your main focus, you probably are one of the few persons who would be upgrading by using an FX-83xx, unless you can afford the 2011-3 chips. But then it's better to wait for Zen and see what happens with pricing.

However, if you are going to do the other things you mentioned in the same rig, especially gaming, then it only makes sense to upgrade within intel as much as you can.

Would it make sense for you to do a scrapyard Piledriver or Xeon build for virtualization, and optimize your current rig for all the other tasks?
