for few couple of  years now AMD's card showed better price/perf in the low and mid sector

HD79xx vs GTX7xx, R9 2xx R9 3xx vs GTX9xx and so on - and still nVidia outsold them

look at the top of the list , what card is that? well of course it's the GTX970

---

and yes, look at the % people who still hold their old video cards:

  • HD79xx -1.24%
  • HD77xx - 1.13%
  • HD88xx - 1.10%
  • HD78xx - 0.91%

why do you think that is? it's because RX480 is not a valid performance upgrade to them

You're talking about sales again.  I conceded the sales number argument already.  Nvidia definitely won there, same as always, but that doesn't necessarily mean that AMD lost.

The 750 Ti is still beating the 1050, 1060, and 1070.  Does that mean that those cards aren't a compelling performance increase?

750Ti is bottom of the barrel stuff and people that bought it did it because

  • they needed a basic video cards
  • they don't have $ to buy anything better

in those cases, people that bought the 750Ti don't seek better cards

yes, AMD lost because sales matter

income matters - it goes towards keeping the lights on and developing new architectures

have you seen the new nVidia HQ? it's a very very big fuck you aimed at AMD who were forced to move out of their Sunnyvale HQ

No, I'm pretty sure they bought it because they need it, not to rub it in AMD's face. I don't like Nvidia, but I don't think they as childish as you are.

The RX480 was specifically designed to compete in the same space as the Nvidia 1050Ti/1060, the middle ground. You do realize that's the exact same thing as the 750Ti was in that generation so your reasons exactly apply to the RX480. The literal contradiction in your reasoning is amazing, why is it perfectly acceptable to buy a 750Ti in it's day but not a RX480 now?

The RX480 is a basic card for people that just want to play games without having to worry and let games do their automatic settings detection, it does this job perfectly and so does the 1050Ti/1060. Having the performance market king is a very strong marketing force, something AMD underestimates, so people will naturally gravitate to that brand for lesser SKU cards regardless if it's the best choice on offer. This happens in all manner of industries, cars for example.

At the time of launch it was a mid range card, same how 1050Ti is now, which is not bottom of the barrel. 720/730 would be the bottom of the barrel cards.

Yes it'a lower mid range card. Last time I checked a card that runs RoTR maxed at 40+ or Deus Ex:MD at 30+ FPS maxed on 1080p is not really a low range "bottom of the barrel" card. You know, not everyone has the money for a 470 od 1060 3GB which can be stupidly priced in some countries.

General rule of thumb is:

Titan/x80Ti = Halo or Top Tier

x80/x70 = High end

x60/x50(Ti) = Mid end

GT(non-X) = Low end

Beats the old G92 days, where you had GT, GTS, GTX, GTX+, Ultra, etc.

Speaking of G92, I'm getting a GTS 250 for a 1366x768@75Hz DX10 gaming rig tomorrow, as that card still flogs the crap out of most low end cards to this day, while also having Windows 7 support unlike my 4th rigs current PCX 5750/FX 5700 (though its aftermarket cooler allows me to run its fan silent, or turn it off completely). Paring it with a uad core Xeon at 3GHz also means that SLI would be viable in the future as well.

Have had quite a few G92 cards. 3 9800GT's, 2 of which died as a result of my little brothers torture. The last one has had several trips to the oven, but so far, it's still kicking. That thing can still handle Dark Souls 3 at 1600x900 with ease, lol.

Looking at reviews, I can understand why Nvidia used it for so long, its actually uite efficient while maintaining excellent performance (though if I could get a GT 740/GTX 650 2GB, Skyrim could be modded a bit more)

It's funny. I only bought a 9800gt because a buddy of mine had two 8800's, and recommended the 9800gt since it was basically a refresh, lol.

Yeah, before that I had a Geforce 6200, Geforce 6150SE (onboard), Geforce 5200, and an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro. I have a Geforce2 MX in my closet still, as it was the very first GPU that I got (was a hand-me-down from my dad way back in the day).
