Can I have a GTX 1060 with C2D E8400

Jipitou99

I was wondering if I could upgrade my old Nvidia 8400GS with a Nvidia EVGA GTX 1060 with a Core 2 Duo E8400 here are my specs

Motherboard : HP 536883-001

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz

8 Gb Ram

Nvidia E8400 1 Gb

Power Supply 320W

If it wouldn't work what would I need to upgrade my CPU or Motherboard ? or something else ?

I wouldn't try. Your processor would bottleneck the gtx 1060 a lot. You'd have to upgrade everything in order to get the most out of the gtx 1060.

The thing is that there isn't a processor on socket 775 which wouldn't bottleneck the gtx 1060. So I would upgrade the system completely and get a modern i5.

Modded Xeon with high OC will be fine in most of the games wth 1060 except gta v n bf1.

But ya its time to say BYE BYE to socket 775 and get an atleast 2nd gen i5 or higher gen.

Too bad that you can't mod nor overclock on an oem hp motherboard.

Yes But i already modded x5460 @4ghz and using it with GTX 960.

Amazing performance for $20 CPU.
I did Ultra setting 1080p, Overwatch and Rainbow Six but CPU+GPU usage both in 98%, getting 55-60+ fps.

I would love to get a modded xeon as an upgrade but in my case I think it would be a safer bet getting a cheap sandy bridge i5 off of ebay for about 60ish euros

I agree on that to get an i5 2nd gen.
Tho that was my fun project but now i'm using it as my gaming pc lol :D
Here see these to get inspired by $20 CPU :D

You probably need to upgrade your power supply but in theory the 1060 should be compatible with the C2D. If you are trying to get a pleasant gaming experience, I would recommend a less powerful card such as the rx 460. You can install this without upgrading your psu and it won't be bottlenecked as much by the C2D. I would also recommend swapping out the cpu for a second hand Core 2 Quad as the rx 460 will still be heavily bottlenecked by the C2D.

Rule of thumb is any processor that still has a FSB (front side bus) just isn't cutting it anymore these days for GPUs with TDP over 100W.

Get a RX460 or something similar.

Theoretically, the 1060 will work just fine, however, the cpu is unlikely to give it enough work to do in modern titles (with maybe the exception of original Crysis).

If you're planning on getting a new system very soon, then grab the 1060, and move it over when the rest of the system is built.
