afterburner is usually best. will you be getting some new nvidia cards to go with your beast cpu.

That's the plan. I got these because they were only $320 combined and a 780 hydro is in the 5-800 range. My board only supports lanes 1 and 3 for x16 SLI, so the loop will need to get a revision as well and I'm working with limited space. Im doing only a moderate amount of gaming and if I want ultra settings I can always use my wifes computer with my 770 windforce in it :) Main reason for the 580's besides price was native CUDA encoding support in a huge amount of software.

Look at the fan speed and temps between these 2  cards! Im getting more impressed with this 280....they score the same on Valley, maybe slight edge to the 280

Please read the text to understand this result better :) .

Ok after intense testing with the GTX980 2way SLI I have the final sweet spot in terms of OC for my cards now. I didn´t check the overall power comsumption yet. But I guess I´m not so efficient now with these overclocks I have got ;) .

The results aren´t that surprising at all, but please keep in mind there are a few things to consider here.

First of all I can only compare apples to apples. That being said all results just count for my own system with the current built that I have here. Surely you can relate similar results to you own PCs, if you want to do so.

I was already in this Unigine Valley benchmark with my GTX780Ti 2way SLI, but this score was with the i7 4770K (5316 points). The final score with the i7 5930K was within the margin of error so I will not poste any other old benchmarks.

Second thing to keep in mind that at this time and point the GTX980 has been just released. That being said the driver V344.11 is brandnew and I am sure we will see some better drivers (hopefully) down the road that are more optimized.

Third thing is that my old results with my GTX780Ti 2way SLI were achieved with a custom water cooling. This is a huge loop with a 9x120mm radiator. So the highest temps that I had were 35° Celsius. The cards were overclocked as far as I could stable push them. The new GTX980s are tested under air, because I do not have any waterblocks for them yet.

What I have seen is absolutely mind blowing! The result it self doesn´t look that great, but the truth behind this is crazy. GM204 is a very potent chip that offers a ton of potential. If I look at it I actually have to rubb my eyes a bit to make sure that what I see on my monitors is true. The OC potential of Maxwell is beyond normal!

If nVidia continues like that the GM200 will be the first chip I would dare to run a single card in 4K.

But back to reality for now :) . Here are my results with the brand new GTX980 2way SLI and I could actually beat my GTX780Ti 2way SLI by a few points :) .

Is that 1451 mhz boost running at 0.85V?

I dont use evgas tool for OCing the GPU so i just see what i see after being awake for 24h+ and just arriving at work :D

If yes, OMG i feel jelly even with my ancient 780

Edit

Could you also run valley with just 1 card?

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

No the Voltage lowers itself just like the core clock does in idle and the PCIe set goes down to 1.1.  When the system goes under load the Voltage is higher. Hehe 0.85V with 1451MHz boost would be totally insane :) .

I can see if I can do that tomorrow and see what kind of results I´ll get.

Could you post some of the power usage? I've got a RM850 and I am looking into using 3x 980s. The scaling on the new architecture seems to make it worth it. From another benchmark I saw there is little difference between 2-way and 3-way SLI in terms of power usage. I just want to be sure.

I´ve got a lot more tests on the platter, so I guess I will help you out on that. BTW I am thinking about adding a third card. It runs so quiet. Idle temp is 22° Celsius... this is with the standard heatsink. Absolutley unbelievable.

EDIT: I have tested this now and I think you will like what you read here BR34K :) .

Don´t forget I tested this on a heavy overclocked Haswell E i7 5930K which has a much high TDP than a mainstream i5 or i7 Haswell.

With this setup and my 2way GTX980 SLI I have in idle: 140W and under load in Unigine Valley 550W total. This is awesome! My GTX780Ti 2way SLI used with that CPU out of the Wall 730W total. Hugh improvement and enough space for a third card ;) . Oh and before I forget this, I tested this with the OCs on the cards of my Valley results.

Brilliant!

Just bought a 295x2 the other day and it uses so damn much power! Nearly set my PSU on fire, so I'll return it and go with 980 SLI then. Either I buy 3 980s next month or I wait half a year to see if anything more interesting pops up. Not quite sure about that yet, but I'll figure it out.

Also: http://us.hardware.info/reviews/5623/11/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-sli--3-way-sli--4-way-sli-review-test-results-power-consumption

If you want to grab another 980, this shows some very impressive results. With new drivers the performance will most likely be vastly improved also. The FPS people are getting in 3-way compared to 2-way maxwell cards is substansially larger than on Kepler.

By the way; could you try running a few high res videos in the background while benchmarking and post power usage then? That's what screwed up my psu with the 295x2. It couldn't handle BF4 and a 1440p video at the same time, so my PSU nearly got fried. If you're overclocking you should be certain you have headroom for such things anyway. The 295 kept steady at 600-700w with just one game running, but once I opened the vid it drew another 80 watts leaving my system starved for power.

I am picking up a Zotac 970 in a couple hours. First thing im doing is running Valley to see how it matches up against my 290.

I doubt at stock, it will beat my 290 score of 3036. Hopefully it will OC decent though and crush it.

true and it will produce a lot less heat. its still not a great upgrade though. also 2x780ti to 2x980's was a sidegrade for

Ya it is probably i side grade for me as well but i got 400$ for my 290 so less heat and power is always good.

OC'd my 970 boost to 1366mhz and 2008Mhz didnt increase the score all that much. My 290 crushed this thing in Valley so far. Going to run some Firestrike now.

What is going on? Those 970 and 980 scores are way lower than I expected.

they are new cards, they will get better over time as new drivers come out.

I hope so. I cant find any other 970 Valley scores to compare. All the reviews have it with AA off and mine is line with those scores when i run it at those settings. The score with AA off is around 4300 to 4500 with the cards OC'd.
