Advice Needed: Upgrade to (Used) 3930K, 4770K, 3770K Or Xeon E5-2670 (Used)

I am siding towards the Xeon E5-1650 option. After, I do plan to upgrade my GPU within the next three to five months to GTX1070 as I game on 1080p. Then after that I will wait a few months then I will upgrade my CPU. So it means I plan to upgrade my CPU in around Q3 of 2017 and it depends if I feel that I need to or not. As at the moment, my FX6300 @ 4.5Ghz is sufficient to play all games I play at decent quality levels. The only games I cannot play smoothly are Cities Skylines when the population reaches 100k+ and Total War: Attila at a very high quality or greater.

option 2 because the 4770K is an amazing CPU almost as good as the 6700K and the Asus Z97A is a grreat board...worth every penny IMHO you'll be set for years of happy gaming.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

May I ask how i7 4790k at 4.6 and stock perform in cinebench r15 both single core and multi core performance .

926 multi core @4.6

181 single core @4.6

888 @stock which on my mobo is 4.4 all 4 cores.

i don't have a stock single core result on hand sorry....I'd imagine around 170 though.

Since I am on limited budget I am looking at the best value for  money.

I have done some calculations that are as follows:

Xeon E5 1650 @ 4.6

Cinebench R15 single core score is 169

Price: USD100

I7 4770K @ 4.6

Cinebench R15 single core score is 181

Price: USD240

The results show that the I7 4770k is 6.85% better performer than Xeon E5 1650. However, the I7 4770k is 82% more expensive .

I need help understanding the differences as i calculated it the Xeon have better value. I am planning to get a decent cooler after a month or two. so cooling wont be an issue.

I am also planning to upgrade again after 6 to 8 months to the latest at that time.

The Xeon looks good, how much will a mobo cost for one of those? 2011 can get expensive....overall looks the right choice though.

ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 Motherboard will cost around USD155

Option 1:
Intel Xeon E5-1650 Six Core CPU - $100
Intel DX79TO Intel X79 chipset - $180

Total cost for Xeon system= $280

Option 2:
Intel CPU Core i7 4770K - $240
ASUS Z97-A/USB 3.1 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 - $100

Total cost for I7 system= $340

I have done some calculations that are as follows:

Xeon E5 1650 @ 4.6
Cinebench R15 single core score is 169
Cost: USD240

I7 4770K @ 4.6
Cinebench R15 single core score is 181

Now after adding the whole cost it made me more confused.

I am planning to upgrade my computer, and I am finding it difficult to choose my upgrade path as my Budget is around USD300 or less. My main reason to upgrade is to be able to play Total War: Attila and Cities Skylines (I only Play those for a while now), as these the games I usually play. Further, my current setup is:

CPU: FX-6300 @ 4.5
Mobo: Asus M5A97 R2.0
GPU: PowerColor PCS+ Radeon R9 390 8GB
Ram: 2 x 8 GB Kingston KHX1600C10D3 and 2 x 2 GB Kingston 9905403-133.A00LF
HDD: Samsung 850 EVO SSD
CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: Antec TPQ-1200 1200W

I have several Options to Upgrade to:

Option 1:

I7 3930K - $150

Intel DX79TO Intel X79 chipset - $183

Option 2:

I7 4770 - $235

Asus Z97-A

Option 3:

I7 3770K - $230

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - $100

Option 4:

I7 2600K - $150

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - $100

Option 5:

Intel Xeon E5-2670 - $125

Asus Z97-A

Option 6:

I3 6100 - $105

ASRock Z170A-X1 - $100

GeIL EVO POTENZA 16GB 2400 - $85

I have included all possible options to me as I researched, please feel free to suggest other components for a similar budget. I don't mind used parts. I am planning to do some overclocking but not that extreme. I use my computer only to play, and my monitor resolution is 1080P. I don't think I will upgrade my computer later at any time soon, so Skylake I3 then moving to I7 6700 is not an option.

I need help in choosing the parts and choosing what is suitable for my budget.

I've got the i7 3770k Ivy Bridge on my office PC having used it in my old build from June 2013.

OC to 4.5 Ghz. On a P8Z77-V Deluxe Mobo with 32 GB ram. The three year old build still kicks butt for office work and in silico computer modelling :)

Its still going strong and as it was a 'top of the line' above average consumer grade chip its still strong now.

I'd say that even today its good. However at US$230 that is too much for what is a 3 year old chip and two generations ago.

My advice. When you're spending hundreds or thousands of bucks on an upgrade you need to be going for latest architecture. I'd not pay any more than US100 for a three year old CPU.

i7 3770k Its a great CPU but its a matter of principle. Save your real pennies for a proper upgrade.

Is the game running really bad on your current setup that you need to upgrade or you just go $300 to waste on upgrading?

It is not very bad nither very smooth. As I play mostly cities skylines the game starts slowing down when i reach a population of 100k, this makes the gaming experience undesirable . I am on a tight budget because I didn't plan for this upgrade and i have other commitments but the reason am trying to upgrade is to enjoy the game after long 10 hour working . Smooth game play has it's merits, while slow and stuttering game play makes the person frustrated and stressed. I thank you for your understanding .

I do agree with you. spending a lot on old generation hardware is not worth it . That is why I am trying to find the best upgrade in terms of value for money . For example, the single core performance of the Xeon e5 1650 overclocked is 169 and the i7 6700k stock is 183. and in multi core performance the Xeon wins. when i look at the total cost of both there is a huge gap. if i have enough budget certainly i will buy the latest generation . so am just a gamer who is trying to play his city builder game in peace after a long day at work .

Try updating the game if there are any patches.

Lower the graphic settings or disable some game effects

I don't play that game, so I'm not sure whether that game is cpu, gpu intensive or both.  Out of your upgrade options, go with option #1. The Xeon is a 6 core with HT making that a total of 12 threads. Some say ram plays a part too, so your system needs sufficient system ram for the game to run when the population in the game increases.

It is a very cpu intensive game and you are right it uses 12gb of ram when i add mods. i do have 2 more ddr3 ram sticks am planning to use as well. And my gpu is oki for my 1080p resolution.

Now my question is that intel motherboard able to overclock the xeon?

Don't know. It's Intel, so they might go by the book of what can and can't be oc.

3930k is also a 6 core, with ht.

Thank you all for your valuable advice and support . I really appreciate all your replies. The location of my job got changed today and as per the management it might change again. Now I have mobility in mind. So I decided to wait few months to save more money then I plan to get Dell Inspiron I7559-2512BLK Laptop for around USD 750 on amazon. I have no how it will perform compared to my current rig.
