Advice Needed: Upgrade to (Used) 3930K, 4770K, 3770K Or Xeon E5-2670 (Used)

I am planning to upgrade my computer, and I am finding it difficult to choose my upgrade path as my Budget is around USD300 or less. My main reason to upgrade is to be able to play Total War: Attila and Cities Skylines (I only Play those for a while now), as these the games I usually play. Further, my current setup is:

CPU: FX-6300 @ 4.5
Mobo: Asus M5A97 R2.0
GPU: PowerColor PCS+ Radeon R9 390 8GB
Ram: 2 x 8 GB Kingston KHX1600C10D3 and 2 x 2 GB Kingston 9905403-133.A00LF
HDD: Samsung 850 EVO SSD
CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: Antec TPQ-1200 1200W

I have several Options to Upgrade to:

Option 1:

I7 3930K - $150

Intel DX79TO Intel X79 chipset - $183

Option 2:

I7 4770 - $235

Asus Z97-A

Option 3:

I7 3770K - $230

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - $100

Option 4:

I7 2600K - $150

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - $100

Option 5:

Intel Xeon E5-2670 - $125

Asus Z97-A

Option 6:

I3 6100 - $105

ASRock Z170A-X1 - $100

GeIL EVO POTENZA 16GB 2400 - $85

I have included all possible options to me as I researched, please feel free to suggest other components for a similar budget. I don't mind used parts. I am planning to do some overclocking but not that extreme. I use my computer only to play, and my monitor resolution is 1080P. I don't think I will upgrade my computer later at any time soon, so Skylake I3 then moving to I7 6700 is not an option.

I need help in choosing the parts and choosing what is suitable for my budget.

For gaming the xeon, and 3930k, aren't going to be great choices they will lack in single threaded speed, if you are doing rendering and stuff that can use the threads they are better choices.

The i3 will be about the same if not worse the the fx 6300 due to the multhreaded speed.

The 4770k, or 3770k would be the best choices.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

I agree. From this two I would go for 4770k just because it's younger.

Any z87/97 board that can accept it.

With the e5 1650 no game will be optimized for 12 threads, 8 is pretty much the max games will optimize for so expect 33% of the cpu to just sit idling, and it is sandybridge architecture still with the haswell chip you will see up to 20% improvement on single thread speed, at similar clockspeeds when compared to sandybridge.

According to this cities skylines is so multi thread optimised and on other posts said the extra cache in Xeon is beneficial . However, i have no way to verify that .

You're not putting a E5-2670 on a cheap board.   Figure $600-$700 for the board and a pair of CPU's.  A deal of a lifetime if you really need 16cores/32 threads, but probably not what most gamers would be looking for.

I meant the E5-1650 with X79 chipset.

Which motherboard will support the xeon e5 1650 as i am really interested in at due to performance  to price ratio.

The e5 1650 @4.6 gets 167 points in cinebench r15 single core benchmark and the I7 6700k stock gets 159 points in cinebench r15 single core benchmark. Further, the Xeon gets much higher score in the multhreaded test (1240 vs 800).

At your budget a 3770k would be a good choice, they overclock quite well, but they do run a little hot....

I would avoid the 4770k (poor overclocking and hot) and go for a 4790k as you at least going to get 4.4ghz out of it out of the box. If you can find a cheap one its cracking CPU.

Hang on for Kabi lake to release, then check ebay for people looking to sell off a cpu and mobo combo's on the cheap.

Once Kabi lake is out i think there will be a fair few z97 boards and chips on Ebay.

May I ask how i7 4790k at 4.6 and stock perform in cinebench r15 both single core and multi core performance .

Usage isn't the same as optimization at all, I have an e5 2670 and rarely do I ever see anything above 60% usage when gaming even in cpu intensive games. If it was optimized it would be at 100% usage.

Any x79 motherboard would work with the chip. Most manufacturers don't list support for it, but it ahould work.

Also 4.6GHz is most likely on dry ice, or liquid nitrogen cooling, definitely not a regular air cooler and with a 212 evo overclocking it would definitely have issues with heat, I wouldn't even overclock any lga 2011 chip with a 212 evo. You would most likely want a 240mm water cooler for anywhere near 4GHz, on that xeon.

Thanks for the reply. Also, I am looking at the single core performance of the Xeon E5 1650, and it is good according to some benchmarks I have seen.

Further, the Xeon E5 1650 on decent air cooling can be overclocked up to 5Ghz and most of them hit 4.6 on 65C degrees max on a decent air cooler.

I have a question:

Can I overclock Xeon E5-1650 on Intel DX79TO Intel X79

The processor is overclockable but I do not know if this intel motherboard will overclock and how well it will do.
