I assume @JackDoyne missed the "done" from the title. Mine was that I forgot to put MB standoffs and screwed it directly in the case. Didn't notice until I powered it up and there were sparks flying everywhere. Somehow the thing survived.

I plugged in the wrong side of the 4 pin CPU plug. Thought I was going to be $600 in the hole on a system that I was building for my brother.

Probably chosing form over function for my first build. Ended up with a Lian Li cube with an awful internal layout where my PSU was vertical and was nearly against my small heatsink.

Put a thumb screw through a molex connector, took me 30 mins to find the fault

Front panel headers which were individual wires vs previous cases which kept them in a complete connector block, I kept wondering why my power button would blink during HDD activity and the HDD activity light would stay lit until I figured out the mix up... oops, I guess that is what happens if you haven't built a new desktop PC since 2008

Forgot to add thermal paste to my CPU, thank god I didn't fry anything.

On one I my first builds, I shorted out two fan cables, resulting in the PC shutting off a few seconds after powering on. I had this agonizing epiphany after two days of troubleshooting and disassembling, and missed a deadline for a case modding competition.

Forcing the CPU retention arm closed when it wasn't seated right because I read it "took some force". My Phenom was lucky to only lose 1 pin, still works today.

I dropped a thumb screw into a fan and it broke the blade. While trying to catch it I hit my computer off my desk and destroyed the case and my toe.

My first and only build when pretty well, my biggest mistake was buying a mATX motherboard when I knew I would be using several expansion cards. Now I have two PCIe raisers, one plugged into the other, and that plugs into a M.2 to PCIe adapter... not the most elegant solution. I also have 3 different power connector adapters to get power to the M.2 adapter for the PCIe slot. I think it's a 4 pin floppy connection to molex then molex to sata then sata to 6 pin, because that's what I had available.

I didn't have the CPU 4-pin pushed in enough.  The clip that locks it into place wasn't actually locking. I figured, "eh, close enough."  Then proceeded to wonder why my PC wouldn't start up.
