How the hell do you remove one of these light fixtures

Bulb burned out and I need to replace it. No clue how to remove the dome glass to replace the bulb.

 

How do I remove the dome to replace the bulb? And whos the a$$hole who came up with this ?

If the glass doesn't turn  then try the ring around it.

The glass is probably stuck from being in the same position so long, what is supposed to hold the glass is usually a brass screw in the very middle.  I'm not completely sure by the picture but if there's a little screw thingy that's supposed to go in the middle of the glass, then that's all that would be holding it.

 

Hopefully someone didn't lose the screw and glue the globe on.

Most of those ceiling fixtures have a "nut" in the exact center, at the lowest part of the fixture. Yours does not seem to have that.

 

You probably have to twist the entire glass - make sure you're turning it counter-clockwise (to the left, starting from the top). Try wiggling it back and forth to loosen it. You could also take the picture in to your local hardware store to ask for assistance - they often employ people who are pretty good "handymen".

Theres no screw hole at all in the middle. This is one of those retarded flush mounted ceiling fixtures.

It doesnt have the nut. I tried turning the entire glass counter clock wise and was afraid I was putting too much force on it. It wiggles slightly from side to side, so I may just have to twist it off again.

I installed those in my old home and they are all correct, either the dome or the metal shroud should turn to remove.

I'll try to remove it again once I get home. Any ideas on how to get some extra leverage?

If you're renting and you still can't get it off, call your Landlord and make them do it. I don't know about NY or US law, but in Ontario, the Landlord is legally bound to perform any and all necessary repairs in a timely fashion, and if a bulb burns out and you can't get the cover off to replace it, that constitutes a repair.

 

And if they break it in the process? Well hey! You're getting a new fixture at no charge!

I ended up doing that, and he had some trouble figuring it out, but he eventually got it off.
