One 8GB RAM stick o Two 4GB RAM sticks?

Hi guys, I have decided not to buy a motherboard because it will be just a waste of money especially my Processor is very old so I have decided to upgrade only my RAM for more faster memory all around my system. So can you guys help me If I should get a Single channel or a Dual Channel Kit? What performs more better on those two configurations on games and rendering videos?

Dual channel is the safer bet as some mainboards won't even support single channel ram.

just get dual channel - just in case 1 stick fails - obviously single is better to free up more ram slots in case you want to upgrade in the future, but 2 is more reliable

What motherboard? That's the question we should have asked first. If you have two RAM slots, get one 8GB stick. If you have four, get two 4GB sticks.

I have an P8H6-M LX3 PLUS R2.0 motherboard and it has two ram slots with the same color. the other is not working but the other is still in good condition. What channel does my motherboard support by the way?

the question we should have asked first is how much he already has, he could just throw in another stick in addition to it and be good

I've been looking at his profile and it seems he's using an i3-2120 with 4GB DDR3.

@Jordan Gulrajani I'd suggest getting 16GB of fast RAM if you can. Something in the 2133MHz CAS 11-13 should do nicely but you'll need Win 7 64bit.

I'm sure about this one...  especially for prebuilt systems. But  since two 4 GB sticks should be cheaper anyway that's what i would go with.

I already have 4GB HyperX Fury DDR3 and maybe running at 1866MHz but the problem is my motherboard's other memory slot is broken.

Oops I have edited my profile wrong my dxdiag says I have Win 7 64bit hahaha I will edit that out later. Is there a single RAM that has 16GB in it? and what is CAS 11-13 so I can examine my RAM more.

Most likely dual-channel. You can use single sticks in dual-channel mode and they will just run at a slower speed.

No troubles. There are some kits with 16GB 2133Mhz.

CAS latency is the time (nanoseconds but they add up) it takes to respond to and get a response from RAM.

All boards can run in single-channel. It's vital to the troubleshooting process and not allowing would cause a maker to be blacklisted to be sure.
