So I am looking into upgrading my system to an i7 and I was told to wait a little bit because Intel is bringing a new i7 line-up soon. So I am sure we don't know everything (or maybe we do) about the processors yet but I don't know what they're going to be called. I was looking into getting the 6700k so whatever processor replaces that one. I am trying to find out when it would come out and if It would be in the same socket as the 6700k and if It would have mmore than 4 cores. thanks for any help

January i think is whats said for Kabylake, cant remember if thats 100% correct but about there

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

It's supposed to be shown at CES in January from what I've heard... so not in shops then to buy, we don't know actual release date of the CPUs and motherboards for Kabylake yet. Have a look through the forums while you're here, there's plenty of rumours/possible spec etc

Why wait? The performance improvement won't be more than 2-5% anyway.

The 6800K is x99 socket and not a relation of the 6700k, the Kabylake successor to the i7 6700k is going to be 7700k.

My understanding is kabylake will not be a big improvement over skylake. They are bringing out 10nm on the 2017 cpus. can you wait another year for the next generation of intel cpus?

Not really. Look at the 4790K, for example: 2.5 years old, and still priced at 340 dollars.

CPUs aren't really like old cars... most of them stay almost the same price as they were new barely dropping in price... just go search 4790k to see, its selling for the same price as a 6700k and is the older top dog that got replaced by the 6700k when skylake came out... so no... the price won't drop by much anyway, so if you are patient then you can get slightly more bang for your buck for about the same price. Motherboards though, the older ones can sometimes be had when shops are trying to clear inventory and the new ones will be close to the $200 range for sure, maybe you can scalp a good skylake for the $120 range if you wanted to try to save $100. Personally if you aren't hurting for money or time I'd say wait but to each their own.

Kaby Lake is actually just a Skylake refresh, so the IPC is the same.

The clock speeds are improved a little, but if you're overclocking anyway, you're better off just getting a 6700K now, as a 6700K overclocked to 4.5 GHz will perform identical to a 7700K overclocked to 4.5 GHz.

Yes prices will drop a bit. Follow up is the 7700K Kabylake with 4.2 core clock and 4.5 Ghz turbo. It won't be 100% same performance as 6700K at that speed, but almost indentical anyway (you won't notice the difference for sure). Performance gain in that case comes from optimalizations in architecture and possible even better boost usage. The I7s are quad core CPU's with hyperthreading so you have 8 threads.

Only Intel platform to get more physical cores is the x99 platform, where you have 6, 8 and 10 core CPU's with hyperthreading so max 20 threads on the top model. But for most people that game, do daily tasks and some occasional editing the mainstream I7 CPU's are overall best option.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

Going ITX I would have to say wait on Kaby Lake. Pretty much same price, as Skylake and you'll have the new chipset (3D X Point support, other improvements), new motherboards to choose from which will have new IO (more USB C, 3.1, thunderbolt, etc..), and probably more RGB stuff. Kaby and Skylake are both better on power than their X99 counter part. There are a few extremely good looking ITX boards for them too, especially that Asus one. If you make more youtube videos than you game then 6800k might be a good option, if not I'd go Kaby unless your money is burning a hole in your pocket, the 6700k is still a good option, you'll just have the older chipset and it "supposedly" will be a little behind the 7700k in overclocks at the same voltage maybe 2-3 more multis out of the 7700k over the 6700k. Won't know for sure until more people get their hands on them to test them.

buy both :P

Im also looking at these cpus.

http://ark.intel.com/products/94189/Intel-Core-i7-6800K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz

6800 k

has 2 more cores

slower clock speed

2.5mb cache per core

better multicore performance

6700 k

uses less power

higher clock speed

2mb cache per core

better single core performance

buy the 6700k, it is $100 cheaper, uses less power, better single core performance.

heres a youtube overclock & gaming comparison:

m-ITX won't be different to ATX, cpu, ram, chips are the same, m-ITX just has less pci slots

The 6700k is currently the best gaming CPU by a decent step over the X99 platform as has been tested several times.

Physically a X99 processor is larger.

Stepping up to X99 is defo worth it. Especially if the price between Z170 and X99 isn't too far away.

size, preformance is also better because of more cores but they are clocked lower and acive lower max clocks so if its not a core dependant task a 6700K with an overclock will do better
