Will this cut it for gaming at 1080p+ on around mid-high graphics? I would like to keep costs AS BUDGET AS POSSIBLE as I'm a student and we all know how that goes  

I know about building pcs and what goes well etc but never made a system for gaming alone. If its not great, make a better build and add it in the comments for me! Obviously don't need to worry about OS as Steam OS is free, and I don't want a case because I'm going to do a custom desk mount

If you can swing it, I believe the RX 460 is a better performer than the 960. Other than that it looks solid.

this is an ok 1080p medium settings machine, would go RX 460 instead of GTX 960 tho because its better value

How would a 470 do for the same as a GTX 960? I'm a music producer so sound cards and processors are my forte

Yes SteamOS uses OpenGL and AMD struggles with that API...

Ah I see, is this all that Vulcan argument then? I remember reading something about how AMD are behind for Linux based systems

Ebuyer have the Palit 1060 3GB for £183 which I think would do better than the 960.

Get a GTX 960. Or, better yet, a used 970 or 980

A rx 460 is about the same performance as a gtx 950.

It would perform even better a rx 470 is a little under the performance of a gtx 970, or a r9 390.

 

You can also use windows 10 for free just deactivated, it will still function like windows 10, but has a few restrictions, steamos will limit you from a lot of games.

Thanks a lot! I will look into the deactivated windows and the games on SteamOS and go from there (obviously if windows without a product key looks good I'll go with whatever GPU I can get cheapest with around the same performance
