Consumers hate a company telling them what they do and don't like. And a lot of people are still quite wary of Microsoft defaulting options that can send personal data to enabled-there is also the small thing of Windows 10 being more bloated than Windows 7 (you need an SSD to make it boot up in a reasonable time-even a WD blue 1TB 7200RPM isn't fast enough).

No, its not-upgrading my newer laptop from 8.1 to 10 made it faster, while with this laptop (which has a phenom II N970 instead of an A8 4555M, both have DDR3 1333 and both have an OCZ Arc 100 240GB) upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 made it slower-and the UI is still worse since it is still best suited to touchscreens (my newer+slower laptop has one, this needs a upgrade to one).

That simply isn't true once you do a clean install as any upgrade should be done. Also, personal data isn't sent to Microsoft. The only data that they collect is specific programs and their architecture (x86 or x64) and the marketing data that is gathered by... pretty much everyone else.

I'm well aware of the mainstream support for Windows 7 being over and done, but I still often get updates to my Windows 7 laptop... :confused:

I was talking about it from a clean install point of view-I know exactly how bad Windows gets when you start installing programs+updates. And the data that is by default enabled is personal-eg. what you type (inbuilt keylogger), web pages you visit (page prediction).

Page prediction occurs on Google Chrome as well. Keylogger, you're going to have to find a source for that doesn't include assisting in Cortana's AI learning. These features are shown to the user and aren't hidden unless the user is working hastily.

Doubt it. Windows Store is the worst of all of them, IMO. Who wants to be locked out of their games after a few years because UWP doesn't allow them to access the game files to produce fixes and work-arounds? I'm pretty sure that Windows Store is going to be the last resort of anyone who thinks that through, because the effect of UWP is that a person's bought games effectively expire and become no longer accessible, once software and hardware has moved on beyond what they were at the time of a game's initial release.

I didn't. Over-reacting would be saying something beyond what is the basic reality and hyping it up. I only pointed out the basic and practical fact, which is something to take into consideration when deciding where to spend one's money: Does one place their money where its value perishes, such as in the Windows Store, or where its value continues to be accessible without a guaranteed expiration of accessibility, such as with another digital retailer?

I just said one, which is that UWP prevents a game's files from being accessible and modifiable, which means that once a game no longer runs on a certain hardware / software configuration, possibly due to newer drivers, newer OS versions, newer hardware standards... any UWP program that isn't further updated by its developer becomes non-accessible.

 

Games have a history of receiving a limited update period from their developers, usually of less than a year. That leaves a lot of potential for games to stop being accessible and playable for people, especially when you consider that most old games sold on Steam require community fixes, tweaks, and work-arounds to get running smoothly, or to get running in the best manner possible.

 

If a person likes to know that their bought games are theirs for keeps, and they like to replay games years after they first released, then UWP is not a good choice, for that person.

Bad publishers are being exposed for being bad and now you're unhappy?

 

If a publisher doesn't fix a game (if needed) within it's lifecycle then they should not publish games.

Oh and I forgot to mention. I've received updates for Watch_Dogs and AC:Unity well after it's first year of being sold.............

OK, so you really couldn't find a legitimate positive about the point that UWP games expire, while games bought from other platforms don't.

 

Games don't have lifecycles, developer-support of a game lasts for a limited duration. And games lose compatibility, over time. All of them. What keeps them running are community solutions.

 

After the period of developer updates is passed, it's up to the community to creates patches, fixes, and share to work-arounds. Gaming communities do this, and it's the basis for almost all the old games sold on Steam, GoG, Uplay, Origin, and elsewhere. Even major games like Morrowind, Fallout 3, depend on community fixes. Games like those would not be playable today, if they released in a system like UWP.

 

And even if games release for other platforms than UWP, meaning that fixes appear for them to keep them going after the UWP version has ceased working, anyone who bought the game on Windows Store will not be able to make use of any fixes that make the game they own work, because their UWP version of the game can't be modified to work with the fixes.

 

Also, I think it's clear that the UWP platform has less to do with being a DRM measure than it has to do with pushing people to Windows 10 and directing people to the Windows Store, and creating the forced-obsolescence of software, so that people have to buy newer software. It's there to work against the consumer and their interests, not for them.

You're calling all publishers and developers bad with that statement, because the same reality of newer software and hardware creating compatibility issues with older games applies to all games ever made. Find me one vintage full-DOS game that I can launch in Windows 10 by running its original exe without modifications or additions to the installation or launch options.

 

BTW, Microsoft seems to put an emphasis on its older software becoming outdated, for the sake of telling people to buy / use their latest software, and you keep claiming that anything less than Windows 10 is expired goods. Therefore, by your own defence of UWP, that it exposes bad publishers who don't make their software last for eternity, Microsoft is a bad publisher, and you're a defender of bad publisher practices. On this point, we agree.

Doesn't mean that Windows 7 isn't a better OS and what the majority of gamers use.
