Dear lord.

Wifi here is terrible. The lowest I've recorded is something akin to 30 kb/s whereas my iPhone gets something like 40-80 mb/s.

I have to start this topic so the rest of the poor souls in my situation have somewhere to be sad that won't annoy the rest of the people with 'good' internet. I don't even know what that term means... 'Good Internet'...

The one thing I've discovered to work is running everything from an iPhone but because that would probably rack up costs insanely fast...

 

Ergo, we need a solution until we get blessed by the lords of fibre optics.

That said: If someone can throw down some knowledge or a suggestion to keep us sane until we can join any sort of anything online quickly, you'll be eternally appreciated.

iirc only one company owns most of the lines, so even if they do have the infrastructure they still have a monopoly and can charge whatever for whatever speed.

You getting 80mb/s that really really good.

Data trasfer is measured in bps not B/s. 8 bits = 1 Byte.

So you are saying you get up to 640mbps.

Point being: Running everything from an cellular seems to be a better idea based upon nothing if not sheer speed for money.

A lot of things can affect WiFi. Your environment being a big one. Building materials of the structure, other wireless networks in the area, moisture in the air. 

 

The biggy is building materials. WiFi tends to be ok with Wood, Plaster and Drywall. However when you get in to brick, Cinder Block and Concrete, you start having lots of issues. Also other devices or networks cause issues. If you have some one on the same wireless channel that is close to you, this can cause interference. Also, be mindful that Microwaves operate on 2.4Ghz which is one of the WiFi bands. 
 

Now there are a few things you can do. First, your router should be in a centralized location in your house. Second you want it off the floor, the higher it is, generally the better the signal will shoot out. Third if one router is not enough there are also wireless access points you can add. Only issue here, is you need to run cable from the access points to the main router. Fourth, change the channels your router operates on if some other networks also occupies the same channel. 

 

You may also look in to Moca and power line adapters if you cant run cabling.

Sadly I am unable to tear the house of which I rent down and replace the materials as I somehow believe I'd be told not to do that.

I fixed the microwave problem a while ago by simply not using one.

I will admit I hadn't considered moving it higher. Probably due to the lack of high space.

Where do you live I get 100Mbps download and 40Mbps upload hate it when people generalise our whole country's internet just because they themselves don't have NBN yet

Yeah, I'm not sure whereabouts you live, but the majority of capital cities in Australia have had NBN rolled out for 5+ years. I had South Brisbane Fiber in 2012 which is 100mbps and  5mbps up, and Now I have 100mbps down and 40mbps up with NBN. It's kind of annoying when everyone thinks our whole country has bad internet because of these kind of posts, I get how people still don't have nbn, but you would have to live pretty far out from the city for it to not apply to you. Wouldn't you at least have ADSL2+ where you are?

 

Edit*: mbps replacing mb/s. 100 megabits down, not bytes.
