Avast aquires AVG Technologies for $1.3 billion, updates brand logo

at some point one of the two (i dont remember which one did it) tried to install a butload of *actually PUP, and potentially worse* on my system, as part of an "update". needless to say i nuked all the installs i had, and with this news i'll stay away from both :/

Yeah, a few times I saw Avasts own safe browser icon appear on my desktop without it asking me to do so. Good bye. lol. ;) That was the tipping point. If I want something installed, I will install it.

Aren't people aware of how much of a beast windows defender has become lately?

Yes, but at the same time, it doesn't have the same functionality that other defenders have. When it comes to free, I'll use Windows Defender over anything else. However, I do have paid subscription to Malwarebytes and Kaspersky. There is additional application functionality that Windows surprisingly doesn't support. Google and Apple allow you to lock your phone if its stolen, but Windows doesn't have that functionality with Windows 10. Kaspersky allows you to "find your PC" and to further lock your hard drive if its stolen.

I don't support free software, because nothing is actually free. It's provided free because they get other financial income from advertising. And they advertise by giving you PUPs.... Gotta love the capitalistic global environment, right?

This will be interesting. You had Avast and AVG software, now you will have Avast with AVG combined. We will see how the software will work TOGETHER.

Spoiler

AVG WAS BETTER, BUT THE 2 TOGETHER WILL PROBABLY BE BEASTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You assume that, but it could also be a bid to shut down competition. Though it's funny, because AVG was just ending is free version and gong to subscription only.

Check out this link about how free antivirus makes money. http://www.howtogeek.com/218675/beware-free-antivirus-isnt-really-free-anymore/

So my assessment is that AVG was leaving the free market. Tons of upset consumers. So Avast steps in, buys AVG, and will release the free AVG again. Larger share of the market of "free" antivirus. Avast will make more money with their "free" tactics than with legitimate sales odd paid subscriptions.

Again... stay away from free. As a technician, Avast is horrible for my clients. No idea why they buy it. I generally get them to the paid subscription of Malwarebytes or Kaspersky. Not a sales pitch to make money (I don't make money on that, Kaspersky and MB do), but a pitch to provide legitimate security to clients.

Lastly, stay way from Avast.
