Is this build good? Opinions?

Trav_X

Browsing eBay when I'm stumbling upon all these E5 2670's for $80 (8 core 16 thread Sandy Bridge). Been looking for an upgrade to my decent gaming laptop but I need some more multi-core power since I want to dabble more in distributed computing and also some stuff with virtualization, but a damn 5700HQ isn't to good for doing that. I came up with a build within the budget of a new build I was planning (~$1100 USD). The machine in this PCPP would do distributed computing, probably some virtualization stuff, and then Creative suite stuff like Photoshop, Premiere, and other forms of video editing. I might want to dabble in some animation, and I took a AutoDesk and CAD instructional class recently and it was quite fun and interesting. I would do some gaming on the side, which is why the 480 is in there. As well, I'd like to use the cores (although quite overkill) for recording gameplay on PC in triple-AAA titles and while having lots of other stuff open for that extreme multitasking. Maybe I'll be able to keep open all 20 of my Chrome tabs while I am streaming GTAV on Twitch in 720p 60fps with F@H going on in the background.

Give me your damn opinions, people. All the stuff that says $0 and Purchased is stuff I already own. Do you guys know if I could just put one stick of my 16 GB kit of Hyper X fury in one slot for each CPU, and it would do fine? I want 16gb of ram at least but I didn't want to have to buy a second kit for dual channel on each chip. The ADATA Kit I have in another PC, so I'd still probably have to get at least another 4gb Kit for that PC I took the ADATA from.

MAINLY I WANT TO FIND WAYS TO CUT COSTS, THANK YOU! PLEASE DONT GIVE ME NONE OF THAT "OH, YOU DONT NEED THIS KINDA SETUP". Im not necessarily going to go out and buy this tonight, but it's an option I am considering. Thank you again.

The build isn't focused on gaming, in my long TLDR description I plan on doing lots of video editing, and stuff in animation and virtualization. The CPU's are cheap and Sandy Bridge, and gaming will only occupy maybe a quarter of my time using this machine.

consider getting better coolers, xeons tend to get pretty hot when under heavy load - obviously finding a compatible water cooler even if its something like an h60 would be nice. but the equivalent of a hyper evo 212 should be fine

I'm considering going for Deepcool Gammaxx 400's, based on reviews they run even better than 212 EVO's but people get butt hurt that they come with blue LED static pressure fans xD but in this kind of build, I'm not really going for PCPP Feature worthy aesthetics

get rid of the leds simple as that, but 212 evos are just extremely reliable and they have a nice sleek look to them

I'll definitely check on eBay for that :) I friend of mine suggest trying to find 32gb of ECC in the form of 16 2GB sticks so I can fill all the ram slots. That however, is at its cheapest $120 USD on eBay :D but I did pose a question in my original post, could I just put one HyperX 8gb dimm in a slot, one for each CPU, and would it post fine? I don't really want to use the ADATA 4gb's because those are currently in another computer in my household, and then I'd end up having to buying at least a 4gb stick for that computer which adds some costs.

I agree, I'd probably just splurge for 212's since they are only $5 more expensive each :D and the thermal paste they come with doesn't suck.

don't need to fill up all the slots. ideally you want them in kits of 4 but it should do fine without it, just that you get less bandwidth. i'd recommend 4x8gb of ECC, use 2 sticks for each cpu. not sure about about that, but it should be fine(not experienced on this yet so i'm not 100% sure). also planning a build like yours too, just with dual e5 2665s instead(half price for a few mhz less).

Okay, thanks :) I know I'm pestering, but jsut in your opinion, would the 2 sticks of HyperX Fury work for now? Until I can get on eBay and pick up a cheap kit?

Actually, I just found this.

i could just get 8 of those for $32 and have 32gb of ECC 1333mhz

According to PCPP the M9i only fits LGA 115x sockets. Ikr, I'm sad as well.
