I have a TI-84+

 

It does what it needs to do. You want something fancy like a smart calculator with a GUI and with chargeable batteries?

There was only one math class in highschool where i actually had to rent a graphing calc for like $20, but that was the only time in my life it was ever required.

Really glad I didn't buy one, because it would have been pretty useless in university.

That would severely limit the material they could realistically cover.

I can agree that you don't need one most of the time, like I mentioned in my other post, but having to do everything by hand in every math class? That's pointlessly cruel.

 

There comes a point where you know how to do something, and you can easily demonstrate it, but it just has so many little steps that hold no importance to the actual question or material and take so much time that it's stupid to do it by hand.

Are you in college or university?

Because the only stuff that actually has to do with numbers is simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.. which can all be done in your head.

The work you actually do with integration, derivation, matrixes, etc... are extremely important to know how to do.

 

That's why you are always required to show your work.

Getting the final answer is barely worth any marks, the process of getting the final answer is important.

That's what they're teaching you in class.

 

If you just use a calculator for everything there is 0 need to take the course and learn anything. You might as well just google the answer or ask on yahoo answers for someone to tell you the answer.

Try trigonometry in physics, where the angle rarely coincides with the ones that are easy to memorize. What purpose does it serve to use Taylor polynomials every time you want to use a trig function?

 

Try a quadratic equation and keep all of those numbers in your head without making a single mistake. At least write it down, geez. 

 

But, handling Calculus with a calculator is a no-no for me. I've always found it easier to write it all down anyway, though I don't have much use for it as a Computer Graphics Technology major. Maybe I will if I end up pursuing what my university calls a PhD of Technology.

Because the only stuff that actually has to do with numbers is simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.. which can all be done in your head.

The work you actually do with integration, derivation, matrixes, etc... are extremely important to know how to do.

 

That's why you are always required to show your work.

That's what they're teaching you in class.

 

If you just use a calculator for everything there is 0 need to take the course and learn anything. You might as well just google the answer or ask on yahoo answers for someone to tell you the answer.

I know all that, I'm not arguing that the work isn't important, I'm saying that some of it is pointless and tedious. Series, large matrices, numerical approximations, computable math (obviously), a lot of stats, -Hell, even some of the more daunting arithmetic (mental math is a point of pride for me, but even then, sometimes it's just not worth it).

 

If I may ask, what are you studying for? This has nothing to do with the discussion, I'm just curious.

But, handling Calculus with a calculator is a no-no for me. I've always found it easier to write it all down anyway, though I don't have much use for it as a Computer Graphics Technology major. Maybe I will if I end up pursuing what my university calls a PhD of Technology.

You leave the answer as sin(45/sqrt(28^6))) or whatever, you don't calculate unless it is a simple final value like sin(pi/2)

My college recommends a Ti-84.

So does my brother's.

I'm not sure if we're the weird ones or you are.

 

And, another 'for the record', Ti-36X Pro. It's $20 and is the best calculator I've ever owned.

And I've owned a Ti Nspire CX CAS. I'd rather use the 36X when I'm not being arbitrarily required to use specific functions unique to the graphing calculator.

Your college might be weird. We're allowed to use any calculator we want on homework assignments, but on exams like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry you're not allowed to have a graphing calculator. Scientific ones are fine, though, since they significantly speed up some calculations.

That's what they're teaching you in class.

So much this. In every Uni math class I've ever been in that gives partial credit the TAs/Profs will only mark like 1 or 2 points off of a problem for getting numbers wrong. But dear God if mess up on the parts that the class is teaching you your grade will be screwed. I literally went all the way through Calc I showing all the steps for every problem that involved trig and writing "haha" as the answer and never got less than an 80 on a test. 

Of course I had to retake trig when I took Cal II
