The FX 8370E is more power efficient with a lesser TDP (95w vs 125w) and a lower clock (3.3 GHz vs 4.0GHz)

higher tdp and clock speed <==> lower tdp and clock speed

but to throw some more fuel on the fire, if you intend to buy either one of these, dont, it is not the time for that.

the fx 8370E is in no way more efficient than the 8370 . It's the same exact chip , just with lower base clocks. when both chips are fully boosted up they will use the same amount of power .

Honestly OP , the 8370E isn't worthwhile compared to the 8370 . It's only worth it if it's cheaper . If you plan on getting an AMD fx chip  ( which i don't recommend , am3+ is ancient at this point ) and want to overclock , be sure to disable cool and quiet on the 8370e , as it has more aggressive power saving features .

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Do you even know what power efficient is? its what takes less wattage AT STOCK not OC, if we OCed a GTX 1080 to 5000MHz we can reach a GTX 480 power consumption and that's not the point, the point is to compare power efficiency at stock

intel suggestions? freaking love my i7 6700k but like everyone pretty much said wait till kaby lake and zen come out, they are coming out very soon, so it is worth the wait via used parts from people upgrading to kaby as well to see the benchmarks in relation to skylake, kaby lake, and zen are.

So FX 8370 is more powerful ?

Out of the box, yes but you can just as easily oc the 8370e to match clocks and it even be higher binned.

What's the system being used for? Are you planning a new system or upgrading?

Judging by the original topic title and what you're after, you can't upgrade only the CPU. You have to buy a motherboard and possibly RAM with it too.

in which case, AMD platform should completely be off the table.

alright thanks for opinions

these are not ''opinions'' they are FACT' i owned an FX-8320 overclocked to 4.6ghz and it was a POS i couldn't max out a GTX 780 at 1080p in many AAA titles...stear clear from AMD at this point the CPU they have are old, power hungry and slow ;)

I never said anything about overclocking . This is at stock .In fact ,both chips will run at 4.3ghz boost . No overclocking required . If i were to run an 8370 at 3.3ghz , it would use the same amount of power as an 8370E . All AMD did was lower base clock but keep the boost clock with this chip ( that way it  usually runs at lower frequencies ) . They didn't redesign the core or anything . the silicon in the 8370 is identical to that of the E variant.

By the way , efficiency isn't just power consumption . It's perf/watt . A more power hungry chip isn't necessarily less efficient . Just look at 8350 ( 125w ) vs i7 6950x ( 140w ) . While the latter does use more power , it is a whole lot more efficient because it's several times as powerful .
