What does the 80+bronze, silver, gold mean?

So I want it get the EVGA 500B and it had a 80+ Bronze 500w then I saw the Corsair CS550M which was 550W 80+ Gold. So what does the 80+ ''rating'' mean.

80+ is the efficiency rating. Most PSUs now days are 80+ certified but they have a new rating within it with bronze, silver, gold, platinum and so on. The higher the rating the better. You should also get a PSU that isn't too big. If you only pull 500W don't get a 1000W PSU. PSUs run at he highest efficiency when close to their maximum rated limit. Then again it is all pretty relative with how efficient things are. Silver to gold with normal use would probably save you a couple bucks a year

Just keeping this here as a Also just because one PSU is 80+ gold and the other bronze it doesn't mean the gold one is better or the bronze one is worse.

You can have titanium rated PSU and it may be total crap. So best to check reviews ... from jonnyguru for example.

A power supply takes AC power from the wall and convert it to usable DC power for your components.

This process isn't perfect and some of that energy will be lost and turned into heat. That is efficiency, and the 80+ rating tells you how efficient it is at 20%, 50%, and 100%.

 

The higher the rating mean the more efficient the power supply is. This helps lower your electricity bill (often negligible) and can make your PSU cooler thus quieter (of course, the fan and overall fan profile will still determine how loud it will be).

 

One more thing, the proper power supply should always be rated for what it is capable of outputting regardless of efficiency.
