Sound Effects Overused!

Common it just ruins a movie or show when I keep hearing the same sound effects in it that are in other movies and shows. 10 Clover Field Lane, great movie, the squeaky door noises I can pull up in iMovie. I started watching Mr. Robot and the cash register noises are the same ones from the original Zoo Tycoon. How hard is it to go out and record your own foley? Same with screams. Hear the same ones over and over and over again.

As long as it is not used in a single film more than..... Once, I am okay with things like the Wilhelm Scream.

I think we use those sound effects b/c they're universally known to represent an idea. Imagine using "yippee" instead of a "beep" for censoring curse words or "clunk" rather than a "click" for a regular door lock.

Not just the Willhelm scream but these sound effects have been around for atleast 20+ years. I think some stock company is probably rich off it

Most likely. However, sound design is damn expensive if creating some from scratch. Not even from the materials or systems needed, but just in terms of time needed. It's just more cost effective for studios to purchase sounds from stock sound companies than to create their own. It's a shame, but the film industry is mostly just for extreme profit now.

Or Johnny Test, abusing the 'whip' sound effect. At some point these sound effects are used so often, they aren't even what they should be (accentuated parts of the cartoon is what they are suppose to be, not the soundtrack of the cartoon darnit!)
