Actually... the first commercial NiCad batteries were sold 1949 where was the first commercial Lithium Ions were sold in 1991.  That's a 42 year gap between major innovation in battery technology.

 

Your demand for 'better batteries' is detached from reality and is based on the idea of 'Just because'.

I just want to focus on why. But others have answered it I guess. Maybe we should be looking at not using batteries and some other form to store energy more efficiently

Methanol is used in some RC cars, not as popular anymore but when i was "active" a few years ago it was a thing, now its all Nitromethane tho

While not they have 2 stroke gas engines on 1/8th scale and 1/10 scale trucks. Nitro isn't as popular as it used to be because the cost of a gallon is like $40-$70. Then to charge a lipo is costs 5 cents

I might be late to the party but I will give my input.

 

The main problem is the limited materials we have to work with.

 

Lithium ion batteries work on the principle of metal reduction and oxidation.  Only metals have the ability to have "variable" oxidation states.  So metal oxides, such as Cobalt Oxide, Nickel, Manganese oxide are suitable materials.

 

For example LiCoO2 is a common cathode material.  Li is a 1+ oxidation while Oxygen is a -2 oxidation state.  This means that when Li is removed from the cathode during charging, the Cobalt becomes a +4 oxidation state to balance the -4 oxidation state from the O2.  when the lithium is reattached to the cathode (discharging) the Lithium's +1 causes the Cobalt to become +3 oxidation, down from its +4.  During this oxidation state change the battery releases about 3.5 Volts (against a lithium metal cathode).

 

Unfortunately the problem here is that the majority of the weight goes to the metal oxide.  In 1 mol of cathode material, 95% of it is metal oxide, while only 5% is the charge carrier.

 

The fact that cathodes are limited to metal oxides puts a strain on the advancement of battery technology

 

Lithium sulfur batteries have shown promising results but its quite unstable.

People have been charged with theft for stealing electricity that way. One that comes to mind was a fella using a public school outlet outside.

 

- Maybe hydrogen will be the next thing for hobbyist fun.

 I have actually used hydrogen fuel cells to power an RC car and it isn't perfect either. The performance is on par with Lipos but the added weight to allow the use of them slows the vehicle to the point Lipos are better. Also refueling takes a long time if you don't have a huge converter.

I mean it isn't just a case of deciding to make better batteries. There is a huge amount of research going into trying to do that but it isn't easy.

The big corps do years of study and spend hundreds of millions of dollars so they dont burn down your house and cause injury or death.

No "China" operation will care what happens to you or your property.

People are using his batteries everyday, for hobbies. There is an actual market for those used batteries.

I cant remember what model he uses, I think 18650 Samsung, green label, perhaps B or something.
