Amazon to issue full refunds in case of Note 7 recall - does not want the phones back?!

So why can't they seem to institute a proper Lipo/Lion charging system with a proper cutoff so this doesn't happen? People have had much larger lipos who discharge much faster and take a lot more abuse survive for years.

I think this is only a very minor headache for Samsung to replace the phones. I wager that they sold less than 100k of these units since the majority of the people got the s7 half a year ago. However, the damage to their reputation is what will cost them the most.

In production, certain items are tracked by lot and assigned to each unit (serial number). If there was a defect with a certain lot, the manufacturer would simply call back the units containing the affected lot. 

 

If a bunch of batteries were exploding, simply take a look at the lot, and which serial numbers they were assigned to, and call them back. No big deal, usually. There's probably more defective batteries that get caught this way than the public realizes. 

 

Looking at the scale of the recall, there probably was a failure in tracking the batteries during production (either on Samsung's part, or their supplier's) thus the need to recall all of their units.

That would be because Apple make their own motherboards so the fact they didn't secure 2 chips is no one's fault but theirs.

I wouldnt want phones that are prone to exploding back either. Imagine they take the phones back, one of them explodes causing a chain reaction leading to a warehouse getting decimated.

That essentially means a bunch of people will get perfectly good free $1000 phones for free lol, well samsung has the money to cover this fortunately for them, though I wish it were iphones that were catching fire/expanding, at least they are also breaking just not in as spectacular a fashion.

Maybe this whole thing about explosive batteries is part of Samsungs plan. They do make tanks and helicopters, so explosives isnt out of question right? One day Samsung will have its own private space mining/health care business lol...

This! A quick and speedy recall and just addressing the issue regardless of the effect on their bottom line when Iphone is likely released in about a week. Got to say, samsung may be making some good long term PR here. I cant recall, but how well did apple handle antenna-gate and bend-gate? It was a while ago so samsung possibly learnt of their mistakes but i think they were alot slower to solve the problem? So bad for samsung now, good for them in the future (trust is a big deal), and good for the industry if this sets an example

It is their fault. They are the ones who in some form allowed such a defect to be part of their product even if they are not the one who manufactured the battery. The whole package is their product. Furthermore, Samsung customers are not the manufacurer's customers, Samsung is.

Wow, this is turning into the same problem NVIDIA had with their original Shield Tablet. They also told ppl to discard their old tablets responsibly and issued bricking updates to old serial numbers. Man I wish I had bought a Note 7 off Amazon before the problem got reported.

 

Samsung will probably have to release an OTA that bricks any old Note 7 with old batteries, much like NVIDIA did with the Shield Tablet... unless you remove the update mechanism (which effectively means you get a free device *ahem* I have two shield tablets /wink).
