PS4 Slim up on an auction site, apparently

Telan

If anyone really cares at this point, a little something from Sony to fight the One S may be coming.

https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/21/ps4-redesign-leak/

Quote

An auction purports to be selling an as yet unreleased "slim line" PS4 that would be thinner, rounder and (let's be honest) decidedly plainer than the original.

Kind of reminds me of the very slight design downturn the One S took too. Any thoughts?

EDIT: My first ever post, so go easy on me.

I suppose you're right. They wouldn't. The design, though...looks the same-ish size to me...

I see a few glaring issues that makes me think this is fake.

  • The front USB ports are spaced far apart for no real reason
  • There's a lack of ventilation ports on the back (unless they made the console vent sideways, which is dumb)
  • It looks too small. If you see the Blu-Ray drive, it takes up about half the width of the unit itself. The Blu-Ray slot in the PS4 takes up about half the width. If you try to do an eyeballing using the controller in the screen shot, the controller is about 3/4's the size of console, whereas on the PS4, it's a little over 1/2.
  • I think the buttons are poorly placed, but Sony isn't above poorly placed buttons.

The Xbox One S looks better IMO. Sony slacks off on redesigns whilst Microsoft improves upon the original.

But let's be honest the Xbox 1 was literally just a big box so all they had to improve was the size.

temporary solution - someone else's problem

Yeah, Microsoft seems to ship things out with a low bar set from the get go.

It's so they generate the illusion of putting tons of R&D into improving their products

Looks....rubbery...not sure how I feel about that. The ps3 slim (not super slim) was the best ps3, and maybe that will hold true for the ps4. I own a stack (5 or 6) ps3s but so far only one ps4, nothing this console generation excites me much really, and I don't fix them anymore, so I have very little opinion on them.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Where did you find a picture of the back side? The link doesn't have any? Thanks in advance :)

Whilst I agree it's fake. The ventilation is on the sides on the current PS4 and the Xbox One. The Xbone however, also have a top vent.

That comparison picture now makes me think....ew. I do like my One S better. The PS4 was also already....eh, fairly, decently....small already.

well maybe its just me but i don't think its all that ugly. It's about the same size as the old one just thinner. The lack of ventilation ports on the back concerns me a little. The current PS4 can get quite hot. So i'm really wondering what they changed in the cooling or if its new hardware in there that just doesn't get as hot. Maybe just down clocked NEO hardware that's running at the normal ps4 speeds? So maybe the neo is bigger with vents in the back to keep it cool.... Kinda could make sense i guess... the USB port placement is idd odd... as are the placements for the buttons.

The ventilation on the sides is meant for an intake, not exhaust. And top venting at least makes a little sense.

EDIT: Ars Technica has more pictures. The size makes more sense now that it's actually up against the original PS4. If it still is real, I'm wondering how the heck it handles exhaust because in the PS4, at least half the back was dedicated to exhaust (PSU is removed). If the exhaust ports run through the trench, I'm not sure if that's enough to keep it cool. The PS4 uses about 140W and even if they moved to a 16nm process, I'm not sure if that lowers the power consumption enough to make heat even more trivial.

And if it is real, I'm also thoroughly convinced Sony hires interns to do their industrial design.

this ugly thing better be cheaper than the $299 4K media compatible XboxOne S

^So much this. The One S actually looks good now, especially with that vertical stand. This, on the other hand, is one ugly rounded asymmetrical mofo.
