Google Duo

Smile

Google Duo video calling app will be released today on Android & iOS.

When you sign up, the app checks your phone number from your SIM and then sends you a confirmation text. That's the whole setup process — there are no accounts to create nor friend lists to maintain. It's tied directly to your contacts list and your phone number.

There is one feature in Duo that feels genuinely new: it's called "Knock Knock." When you receive a call on Android (it doesn't work on the iPhone), your entire screen starts showing the live video from your caller before you even answer. It lets you see who's calling — and lets the caller make funny faces to try to entice you to answer.

For those worried about people hijacking their screen with a video feed while they're at dinner or a meeting, a few notes to ease your mind. First, Knock Knock only works with people you already have saved in your contacts — so random people won't show up. Second, you can block a caller if you like — but take note that since Duo doesn't have its own independent friends list, blocking a caller on Duo blocks them everywhere. Last, you can turn the feature off entirely if you don't like it.

Looks like it's only for social, happy people with high end non-3g phones that are capable of running live video feed without buffering every .0001 seconds. (/(ಠ︵ಠ)\)

only for people in korea with their 1 gigabit cellular speeds. 3g ftw, I have never needed 4g once (except for watching a video, but I usually have wifi for that), 3g is more than enough for social media and linustechtips.com

hello!

is it me you're looking for?

Laptop:

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

It depends on where you live I suppose. I get good enough speeds to stream youtube, and my upload should be enough to send over 720@30fps. I get around 20/5 on 3G here, sometimes up to 50/10 depending on location, time of day and how crowded it is.

I guess it's not only tied to the phone number. I mean, what do you do on your wifi tablet ? Hope you can signup using your phone and then it's working with your email...

It's kinda cool to have something like Facetime but that work across iOS and Android. Seriously what do you guys use when you need to video chat with relatives ? Skype ? At the moment, the easiest option for me is to use Facebook Messenger, which isn't always great.

For now it's mobiles only. If you want an account based app with more features try Google Hangouts.
