New AMD cards? This can't be all the Polaris desktop GPUs right?

So I'm looking to buy a new GPU in the near future and I really hoped for something from the Team Red side of things (Vulcan ho!) that would at least match a 1070 or even better. One can dream right?
But as I was googling for an 'RX 490' all I could find were rumours and/or articles that stated that the RX480 was the best we were going to get for now (mostly just skipped through the search results to be fair), and that the 480 would be the top of the line as far as AMD will go with Polaris. So now my question is - Really? Is this all we get in terms of Polaris GPUs? Will we have to wait for the Vega architecture for something to compete with the likes of 1070s and 1080s (or by then 1170s, 1180s). Now I do know that there still are the Fury cards that hold up rather well-ish compared to Pascal, but I've been a bit weary of those since I heard a lot of people complain about coil whine across all three models.

 

What do you guys think or even better, know? Is this all we're getting on the desktop side from Polaris?

They're the only Polaris cards, but they're not the only GCN 4 cards coming. The higher end models are going to use HBM2 which is not widely available yet.

I imagine they must be putting something together for a replacement for the 390.  I too am on the fence with the Polaris generation.

Polaris is 480 and below.

Vega is 490 and up (most likely).

Nah, other than the 490 (dual 480) those are the only Polaris cards. Vega is a different architecture.

I just said they're the only Polaris cards. Vega is not a different architecture. It's still GCN 4.

the rx 480 has been confirmed to be the full polaris chip. http://videocardz.com/61840/full-amds-polaris-10-gpu-has-2304-stream-processors

if theres a 490, it will have to be vega or a dual p10 card.

RX 490 will most likely be a vega card

Polaris is mid-range, Vega is high end. That's how GCN 4.0 is.

AMD said at a previous financial meeting that they're reducing the traditional time between an architectural improvememnt, Vega is either an entirely new architecture (unlikely) or another evolution of GCN, thus GCN 5.0

Well they're citing improved power efficiency, so I'd hope it's more of a change than that.

That is definitely not something I would bet money on. I don't realistically see how 2 different architectures could be developed side by side to be released 6 months apart. We don't have Vega yet because HBM2 only recently went into production.

So we definetly have to wait until 2017 to (maybe) see any improvements in single chip performance. That's just great. But none can do I guess...

Companies, as a general rule, don't lie at these huge conferences, they could be sued for giving stock holders false hope. This happened when they over hyped their Lalno APUs.

Said power efficiency is most likely coming from using HBM instead of GDDR5/X. Investors wouldn't know the difference. I'm 500% sure there aren't going to be any uarch changes.

I'm 98% sure it is 480X, 490 and then a 490X. Trust me I watched the AMD live stream they called it the 480X when it was beating a 1080

If you could show me a video or transcript of it being called that then fine. But AMD is making an effort for good product names. RX 480X is not a good name.

Why would that leave them open to lawsuits? What does it matter if they're achieving better efficiency by using through their choice of VRAM instead of uarch changes? They've already achieved better efficiency with GCN 4 anyway. Did the call specifically say efficiency achievements over Polaris?

Because it would make Vega appear better than it is. So people would buy stocks betting on the success of Vega. If that was a lie they've wasted money on false promise. When AMD released their GPU roadmap Vega was listed higher than Polaris in regards to efficiency. This, coupled with the promise of an improved architecture make it likely that there are architectural efficiency improvements.
