yes. You can run a 980 on a 400W.

A 1060 could run on a 300-350W.

What system could he possibly have assuming his only graphics card is a 1060 that would require more or even 600 watts? :D

Manufacturers always name way too much, just "to be sure". Since people could use a cheap 20€ No-Name PSU. Those things might have 750 Watt, but even under 350-400 Watt load they can't handle it stable.

I have a GTX 1060 right now :)

Running with an i7 6700k @ 4.2 Ghz (1.17 Volt), 2 Case Fans, 1 SSD, 2 HDDs.

Under Full Load (Benchmarks like Valley, 3D Mark. Games like Metro 2033, Overwatch, Assassin's Creed Unity), my Whole Computer draws 180-200 Watt out of the Wall (Yes, i have a wattmeter thingy plugged in directly between Wall and PSU). Maybe i saw 210 watt or 215 as some small Peaks.

So yea, a High quality 300-350w PSU would be enough, as long you don#t go into super hardcore Overclock mode, or play Prime/Furmark ;)

But that doesn't mean, you should get a 300w PSU. But 400w is really fine. I like when i have much Space up. since your next GPU in 2-3 years might Consume 100 watt more. so you are "save" for that. 400-500 even is fine, and just "Ready for everything".

More than enough. A single GPU will almost never use over 500W (unless it's like a 295x2 which technically is two GPUs anyway). 1060 uses very little power.

Very true and good to know that it is actually THAT low. Back when I built my rig I got a 650 Watts PSU for an i5 760 and a GTX 460. Way too overpowered for that. Meanwhile I upgraded to an i5 6500 and the whole thing pulls not even 270 watts from the wall ( I have a wattmeter thingy too :P ) but that is with 2 monitors hooked up to the cord aswell and a modem so the system itself needs even less. I guess if I get a 1060 later this year it will even lower my power usage.

Also I don't think that in 2-3 years a card in the same class will consume 100 watts more. If we went in that direction that would be bad!

You can never know what people do so you have a point too! :D However screens are not powered by the PSU. xD You would have to have like a server with 2 xeons and loads of HDDs in it. But why put a 1060 in such a thing.
