is my isp limiting youtube's connection speed,or is it youtube's fault?

I haven't looked into it too much but it's supposed to indicate throttling by your ISP by mimicking a stream such as YouTube or other commonly throttled services so if you get less than a normal speedtest you might be getting throttled. I know there are others out there and this one might just be crap.

Yeah it could be throttling or it could be that their server just can't serve up enough bandwidth to all users at that moment :P 

I don't love my ISP by any means, but I would like to be a little more sure before blaming them...

If you right-click a Youtube video and click "Stats for Nerds," you can see the connection speed in Kbps. That seems to me like a better way to tell if your ISP is throttling Youtube content than relying on a third-party tool.

First off, there is a difference between MB and Mb.  MB is Megabyte, and Mb is Megabit.  Steam reports transfers in Megabytes... so 7MBps * 8 = 57Mbps.

 

But the youtube thing isn't a thing.  You only need about 3.5Mbps in order to watch a 1080p youtube video.

I wonder because I pretty much can't, but like I said, we get 20 - 25 Mbit... so maybe that throttling detection tool is right then ,because if 4K does need ~10, that would explain why the 8-9 I get on youtube doesn't cut it.

So I noticed this and did some research. Youtube has a load balancing protocol or system and you will never get what your Internet is rated for. I get 400Kb/s so I just use VLC to capture the stream and download it. It shouldn't be any faster but for me instead of watching a 15 minutes video in 360p and have it buffer every minute I can download it in 1080p in 5 minutes.

first off i know that,the steam example is just there to show that i'm getting what i pay for and sometimes even more...
secondly the yt thing is a thing because i'm only getting a connection speed of about 1,2Mbps as i said in the post m8

Have you tried calling your ISP and ask them if they are aware of any issues in their network?

 

I dont know why people always assume that their ISP is a bunch of assholes who only wants to swindle their customers and give a bad service..

It is a lot of engineers jobs to make sure the network is running smoothly and there is nothing they would like more than for the users to tell them if something is wrong.*

 

I am of course not totally ignorant about the fact that in some countries, there is less governmental control and business practices in some companies is different.

 

*I work for a major ISP and all we care about in my department is quality and a good customer experience, it is a very central part of the company and the network performance is constantly being monitored and improved upon to ensure that all customers are happy with us and their service.

Download tunnel bear and try it then. My Youtube connection speed went from 1.1Mb/s to 9.7Mb/s. I can now watch 4K no problem when 480p used to stutter!

See what the connection speed is when you connect to the VPN on youtube then without it. Speeds should be faster and if they aren't then you ISP is throttling encrypted traffic too and you can't do anything

Could you, by any chance try and packet capture a bit with wireshark etc and see which IP you are getting the media from? 

There were some trouble some time ago with some US ISP (*cough* TimeWarner *cough*) shaping international youtube traffic down to 144p.. So if you are getting your data from a CDN inside their network, that might be why it is so slow for you..?
