Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

 

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Also Vulkan is still pretty new with bugs and no async support so in a year or so DX12 and OpenGL will need to change fast

async compute support was available in Vulkan from the time it was released. Check my previous post. The devs have got it working well on AMD,

they are also working with nvidia to try and get it going via future driver ( similar to AOTS dx12 situation).

Why would I pity Nvidia when they have the best and most up to date cards on the market? AMD's efficiency still isn't good (especially with video decoding-its utterly terrible and your better off using software decoding as it uses less power), the R9 390 isn't better at 1080p than the GTX 970 and matches it at 1440p, the R9 390 is just an 8GB variant of the R9 290, and the R9 380 is just the R9 285 renamed. AMD's graphics division has gone to shit because they thought that graphics cards would die off because they thought that iGPU were taking over (read-they were relying on their APU), combine that with their utter lack of anything new on the CPU side of things for several years, outside of a few products and pricing (with some countries having ridiculous increases over what the price should be for both AMD and Nvidia) they have nothing worth buying at the moment.

What's interesting is the difference in framerate seems to be higher than the difference in benchmark scores between those two processors. Can't wait to see how Vulkan will score :)

On that note-AMD is known for its poor handling of API. With their Mantle being as good as Nvidia with DirectX 11, and as reviews and benchmarks are showing its the same kind of deal with OpenGL and Vulkan-they got a big improvement yes, but that's because they didn't handle OpenGL properly in the first place.

this is true. One of the reasons AMD stands to gain a lot from Vulkan is that they never had a fast openGL implementation which was competitive with nvidia.

 

doom did perform quite well once the drivers were optimized for it but in general AMD always struggled with openGL. Which is why they were often derided for Linux gaming performance.

How? Better performance at 1080p and trading blows at 1440p while consuming significantly less power under a gaming load and decoding video (software decoding with a CPU uses less power than with an AMD GPU), with half the vRAM needed, lower driver overhead and a smaller memory BUS. (Point is, AMD has to brute force everything)

I am getting sick of having to debunk confused lies after so many months.  The 970 and 390 trade blows at 1080, it's not a clear win for either, with perhaps the 970 being SLIGHTLY ahead there, losing at 1440p slightly, more at 4k, and getting blown out in dx12/vulkan.

 

 

So to recap.  Trades blows in dx11, but the 390 leaves the 970 in the dust in dx12/vulkan.  Performance focused games will be using dx12/vulkan, choose similar perf (dx11) + BETTER performance (dx12/vulkan) with the 390, or similar perf in dx11, worse performance in dx12/vulkan in the HIGHER performance demanding titles coming out more and more frequently but... better perf/watt.

 

This comes down to whether people want something with more performance to play games, or more perf per watt to... put out slightly less heat into a room?  Save 5 dollars over 6 months in energy bills?

 

For myself, I use graphics cards to PLAY GAMES, not look at a watt meter.  People who say otherwise, I suspect are lying (or confused) and just picking whatever angle they can latch onto to cheer lead for their favorite brand.  Which is fine, but don't lie about it.

 

 

390 = better overall performance + higher energy use

970 = worse overall performance + less energy use

 

Gamers who want to play games with a better experience... tell me, which combo achieves those ends?  This is not hard.  It really isn't.  And every single time people like you come onto these forums and start lying to people and telling them a 970 is a better performer, it causes worse results and breeds deliberate misinformation to gullible children.  Be honest.  If your data set contains project cars and the witcher 3 with hairworks, then fine, the 970 blows the 390 out of the water.  But that is not typical.

 

ANYONE who chose a 970 over a 390 expecting better overall performance, even in 1080p going forward with all the dx12/vulkan titles on the horizon, chose wrong.  And people like you lead them off that cliff.  It's not a disaster, the 970 is still a good card, but it is NOT a better card than a 390.
