lol dude 80c is fine.  My RX 480 hits 90, so you're fine man.  But maybe 80 is high for Pascal, not sure

Depends on the capability of the card, each card varies on its O/C Ability, and it also depends on where you live and ambient temps/humidity

Fans (presuming you mean ambient room fans) don't have any effect, they don't cool down air, they just push air around faster, creating a breeze, it doesn't actually have a huge cooling effect. But still, as already said, 80c is more than fine, my 290X runs at 95oc max.

Different style of cooler, the MSI is designed to exhaust its air into the ambience of the case to be removed (therefore a low static pressure) whereas the founders edition using a blower style relies on a high static pressure, and dumps air out the back of the case.

What's the base clock of the 1080 founders and the MSI one? MSI cards have a factory OC.

As said, it depends on how your case cooling is setup, if you're not dumping a lot of air in and out of the case, it wont be getting enough air

anyone have any idea why i could be getting these temps? all the reviews i have read reported temps around 70c at the highest... so far the only benefit i have gotten is aesthetics as it matches my theme much better and quieter as it stays around 7780c with 70% fan vs 100% fan i had to use on the FE

Take the side off your case, see if the temps drop. If they do you need to address your airflow.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

The GTX 1080 will overclock itself as highly as it can until it hits whatever temperature limit you have set, and then it will sit there. If you aren't happy with it being 80 degrees, go into MSI Afterburner and lower the temperature. It will then "throttle"* as required.

*it's not really throttling, it's just not overclocking itself as far.

Test it with the side panel off.

i know that is fixable but im not sure if MSI lets you remove the cooler like EVGA does and i have never do something like that with a video card before and i have no way of replacing it right now if i need to, so at this point im not sure what to do...

If there is a sticker on the heatsink screw then nope. Or you can try upping the max fan curve. I always thought the reason my Msi 980 Ti got to 80*C is because the tim was fucked. But as it turns out, the 980 Ti is just hot. Reapplying the tim didn't help.

i wouldnt be worried about it if i didnt see reviewers getting lower temps around 69-70c and yeah theres a warrenty sticker on it

Either the cooler is broken or crappy TIM application.

My 275w card max out at 82c with 72% fan speed yesterday playing Witcher 3 for 12-14 hours.

Current temp after playing for 3 hours today.

not sure what to do at this point as reapplying TIM would void warrenty but im unsure if this is a good comparison as the 1080 is a completely different architecture and my card maxes out at 80c with 70% fan speed drops to 70c with 100%
