high temps with MSI 1080 Gaming X

SHADY16

If a 180w TDP card is hotter than 275w TDP, why it's 180w TDP in the first place?

Also mine use the older TwinFrozr 4 cooler, the new TwinFrozr 6 should be better.

I think @Megazero use the same card, maybe he could give some feedback.

he uses the msi 1070 gaming x and i think the TDP on the gaming x is a bit higher then the founders edition 1080, yeah it is 198 TDP

Ahh.. my bad but still, Hexus tested the card and it only get to 73c.

With reasonably low fan speed. I know how loud these TwinFrozr fan can get when reach 70%.

And they tested it inside Fractal Design Define R5 Windowed, not on open bench.

As long as you don't physically damage the card removing the cooler your warranty will be fine if you replace the thermal paste, make sure you use something non-conductive like Arctic MX-4.

but my card has a little sticker right on the screw to remove the heatsink that clearly says warranty void if removed

Might be worth shooting MSI an e-mail to clarify the situation, they'll probably say you're fine to replace the paste as it will be one less RMA for them to deal with. This post here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184834.0 shows that apparently MSI allow users to remove the cooler even if the screws have tamper stickers on them.

Ah well, in that case, the fastest way to do it is to just get the shop you bought it from to replace the card. Just tell them it's overheating and they'll probably just replace it without asking too many questions.

It isn't normal. My 1080 normally hits 71°C max out of the box (1911-1949 Mhz) and 74° while overclocked (2076 core/ 5454 memory), but once I put the fan to 60% the temps lower at around 65°C (while overclocked).

Try changing the thermal paste on the card.

I would do that if they had any in stock but they out of 1080's atm

that but I have never took a video card apart and have no way to replace it if I mess it up and have no back up card

I just had to laugh at the part where he said I'd return it but they are out of stock.... Like...

Oh yea, they are still low stock, just be glad you got one, even if it's broke. ROTFL...

Yea, just deal with it the way it is and return it when they get more stock in 1-3 months.

Will still be under warranty. Run that beotch hot and hope it just breaks.

What a sad tale though to trade the FE card and get something AIB to perform at slower clocks that runs hotter... yikes... that's losing the silicon lottery alright.

Hmm... that certainly high... My Gaming X 1070 OCed to 2113 Mhz Core, +750 Mhz Memory clock at ~ 75-78% fan speed run at max 58 degree, so with the 1080 I dont expected it to un at ~80C...

i have the temp limit at 85c and the reviews i have read it didnt get passed 70c

What clock speed is it boosting to? You've set the temperature limit to 85, so it will be boosting as far as it can while targeting 85 Celsius. If you don't want it to reach 80C, then don't set the target temperature to be higher than 80C...

What is your ambient temperature as well? It is the middle of July. If you don't have air conditioning that will affect your operating temperature.

it's only boosting to 1911 mhz then drops down to 1880

well after some playing around with it i managed to redo my overclock of 2125 boost 5400 memory and made a profile with msi afterburner similar to msi gaming app but with it being at 100% fan at 70c keeps it there and under 50c fans go back to 0 like it was out of box. only irritating thing is i cant keep the LED red like i would like to as having the gaming app open messes with the fan in afterburner
