Would a i5 4430 bottleneck a 1070?

Pr0pagandalf

I currently have a i5 4430 in my rig, and I'm planning to upgrade my gpu(gtx 960 2gb) . The question is, would the processor bottleneck a gtx 1070?

Yeah, it will bottleneck in some games. Most games you'll be alright though.

You can't OC that CPU (other than some BCLK OC'ing) because it's a locked CPU.

No, a 1080 yes, 1070 not really unless the game is an unoptimized POS

In some games even GTX 970 OC is to much for i5-4460!

In some games yeah.

Those CPU heavy games, and those with bad optimisation.

Basicly every MMORPG.

Thanks for all the replys, would upgrading to a Xeon E3-1241v3 help?

Which an Intel CPU does on it own, if it's running cool enough and it needs more power. Hardly something you can call "you would have to OC it".

Over Clock

its Over the stock Clock for me its a Overclock, for some people OC means 0.1Ghz,OC does not mean 5Ghz stable it means its over the stock clock

Thing is you said OP would need to overclock his chip, while the chip actually overclocks itself. If you had said "you will have to make sure it runs cool enough so it can OC itself [turbo boost] when gaming though" it would have made more sense.

It's not recommended to use Xeon for gaming.

Just buy GPU now and test games that you usually play.

If you will notice some CPU bottleneck, save up some money and go for i7 unlocked version.

I would never buy xeon for gaming. Those are meant for workstations and server basicly. Sure you can play games with them, but they don't have any kind of OC avaliable, and not that great single core performance.

Pay those 50$ more and get decent i7 for gaming :)

Actually more than a few forum members use a Xeon, it's perfect for gaming as you get more CPU for your money since there isn't a iGPU.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I know it's cheaper because there isn't iGPU and can't be overclocked.

But I was told that single core performance isn't that good with those CPUs.

I did some research, and found out that it performs just like my i7 4790 locked CPU.

Sure it can't compare with K version at 4,8GHz, but you are right: for gaming in general it's pretty decent CPU.

I apologise for my mistake.

No worries, I felt the same way until I looked into it and now I'm putting one in my HTPC.

In some games, yes it will. My older i7 2600K was better than the one you have, and it did bottleneck in witcher 3 even when overclocked to 4,5Ghz.

Anyone saying otherwise is straight out lying. I doubt you wont get playable frames though, but you will get performance drops in some games because of this.

Many told me that my i7 2600K did not bottleneck a 1080, but that was straight out bullshit. Your cpu WILL bottleneck a 1070 in some degree in some games.

I just got my 1070, I have a I5-4670k which is a bit more powerful than your processor and its Overclocked to 4.3ghz. In Witcher 3 1080p ultra settings, when in novigrad, the cpu usage goes to 90-100%, which means its slightly bottlenecking but when in wilderness its at about 60%. So yes it will bottleneck very slightly, but its not something to worry about.

[CPU: 4.3 GHZ I5-4670K] [MB: Gigabyte Z87-D3H] [RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1833 MHZ (8GB)]

[GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1070] [PSU: Corsair CX-750] [Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo]
[Storage: 2TB 7200RPM HDD / 500GB Samsung 850 EVO ] [Case: ThermalTake Chaser-MK 1]

[Keyboard:Corsair K70 RGB Cherry MX] [Mouse: Razer DeathAdder] [Monitor: 2 x ASUS 24 INCH IPS (1440p Soon)]

You'll be cpu limited occasionally if trying to push 60 fps locked and cpu limited almost always if trying to push 120+ fps. The only cpu I would even consider upgrading to if you want to keep your board is the i7-4790k since it runs 4.2 GHz on quadcore loads at stock (assuming you're not heavily voltage limited on your board) while also having hyperthreading. It would make a difference in a select few titles like Fallout 4, Crysis 3, and in Novigrad in Witcher 3, and should make a really serious difference in massively cpu bound games like Arma III. But in your shoes if you're buying a 1070 to use at 1080p I'd skip buying a new cpu and put that $300 towards a 1440p IPS panel.
