HummingBad malware spreads to 85mil android devices

A stream of malware called HummingBad had reportedly infected 85 million Android devices. It generated at least 300 thousand USD in ad revenue.

A strain of of Android malware has infected 85 million victims across the globe, generating at least $300,000 every month for the gang behind it, thanks to millions of pop-up adverts and app downloads.

 

On top of that, experts have warned that the spread of the malicious HummingBad software could be used to do even worse damage by stealing victims' data.

 

It works either through root access or software updates.

Once the attack is underway, HummingBad attempts to gain root access to the device using a rootkit, which if successful gives attackers full access to the infected phone. If that attack method fails, Hummingbad will also use a fake system update notification to trick users into giving it access to the entire Android system.

 

This type of malware was originally discovered in China back in February.

The mobile malware has been analysed by security researchers at Check Point after it was found on Android devices belonging to two employees at "a large financial institution". In-depth findings on the malware are laid out in the company's 'From HummingBad to Worse' report. The gang behind the malware -- thought to be located in China -- are estimated to generate around $1m every quarter from fraudulent ad revenue and the installation of bogus apps

 

While this new threat seems to be more oriented toward the adware definition this still acts as another reminder of the potential dangers of rootkit malware.

Well, now I'm completely paranoid. Activating lockdown.

*locks door, shuts windows, puts all devices in airplane mode, revokes all app permissions, reinstalls OSes, downloads every AV program out there, runs virus scans CCleaner and ADWCleaner every 30 seconds*

So... Any word on what sorts of android devices are susceptible?

 

85 million might seem like a lot, but there are 1.4 billion active Android devices world wide....

 

Also I think based on the data here at least I can feel safe I am not infected. No random popups haha.

Recently i changed my main mobile os and now i use Sailfish OS. Try yourself. More linux then android can ever be, faster, smoother. scroll is much better now and the most amazing thing is multitasking. Real fucking multitasking like on PCs!!! The best on the market multitasking. And it can run android programs :D All in one OS for mobile devices :)

It's funny how the news are always "100 million Android devices infected with malware".

Then you read on and it says "In China". It's always China. Nowhere else. That's what you get with third party app stores and mass side-loading from dodgy sites.

 

PS. Yes, Google's Play Store isn't quite infallible but it's better than the alternatives at least.

also flashed sfdroid + gapps. So i have google play and can run all android apps.
