Are they any good? I'm considering buying the Ultrastar 7K3000 2TB. Anyone have any experience with any of their drives?

I remember jokingly referring to the Deskstar as the Death Star back in the day because they were always failing and taking all the data with them. That was 7-8 years ago, though, and I've dropped a few into PCs lately without any issues. I'd put one in a PC as data storage without any second thoughts.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

I have had good experience with them. Only thing I would complain about would be the moderately loud seek sound of the R/W heads on certain hitachi models. Not sure about the noise level of the new drives though.

Hahah me too. I am still using one from an SGI server and besides SATA 2 it is still one of the fastest, and hottest drives I have used to date.

Aren't they HGST drives?  Hitachi is supposed to be really good for hard drives.

Yes and no...

 

HGST is Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, which Hitachi actually sold to WD 5-6 years ago.  And their (especially NAS drives) are considered some of the most reliable around, although at least from personal experience they can be a tad noisy on seek at times.  My WD reds are louder on spin-up though.

I'd personally recommend their 3TB NAS drives even for desktop use, as they are still 7200rpm.  $~120US for 3TB is pretty good deal.
