Questions about cpu and mobo compatibility

I have this really old computer that is becoming extreamly slow.

It currently has this shitty processor:
https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Athlon-2-7GHz-2x512KB-Dual-Core/dp/B002RMT6SQ

The processor usage frequently jumps up and down by like 30% and that is just browsing the web.

This is the current mobo:

I wanted to upgrade the processor to this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286

Now, that processor is really good bang for the buck for only a work station that is not supposed to do anything more advanced stuff than excell and word.

I wanted to know if the amd fx-6300 is compatible with the mobo that the computer has. I dont know much about this and when I searched for an answer I only got presented with a lot of advanced stuff that I dont feel like learning right now :)

Thank you for your help.

It should but there is a chance the BIOS might not support it with it being a OEM board so I can't be entirely certain.

Pretty sure you can't rely upon an AM3+ CPU working in an AM3 board.  The pin count is different, for starters.

My advice:  go look for a budget Skylake board and Pentium/Celeron.

You can probaly get a phenom ii to work fine with it, and there much cheaper. Also if the cpu is having higher useage, you don't need to change it. The cpu should be fine for web browsing.

AM3 and AM3+ are not interchangeable.

sayz that a  Athlon II X2 270 will work

has a 69% of workiing with double your L2 cache and +.7GB for only $20-$25.

How much RAM you have and what kind? Maxing out old hardware is fun and cheap (mostly).

But you can keep it. It can serve as a good test bench for the future.

I assume it's ddr2? Are they 1gb sticks? How many slots?  I would go for broke and upgrade the CPU and max the RAM out. Shouldn't cost more than $30 using eBay and Craigslist.
