to make it clear, I'll once again state that I don't know how US laws work nor do I know the designations of government institutions in US, I was talking about the topic from a perspective of my government assuming everywhere else in the world it should be +/- the same

 

in my country the office of internal affairs is responsible for biometrics system for both criminal and civil data and they grant other governed institutions appropriate access to the data - criminal for police and civil for hospitals, banks and document issuing authorities

I suppose FBI is something like the office of internal affairs, are they not?

I mean, not really a big deal TBH. Anyone who has traveled to London for any reason has their face in Britain's facial recognition software; there's hardly an area outside in the city which isn't watched with CCTV cameras. And it's not like London won't know who you are either. You'll be in some form of citizen database if you are a national, or  if you were traveling through they'll be able to backtrack your movements through the city, find how you came there, and get your name from the travel records. Unless I'm actively being followed by the government WITHOUT them having suspected me of wrongdoing, as well as paperwork permitting them to keep tabs on me, I see no issue with this.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. I even had to get my fingerprints scanned and a background check done by the DoD for a non-security clearance internship.

 

Between my Drivers Licenses, Passport, and everything else, I wouldn't be surprised if they even know my route to and from work. Luckily I don't see California on that list (yet) but given I've had an passport since I was a wee lad I presume they even have photos of me in my younger days.

 

I think we're becoming too much of a surveillance state to be honest. Between private entities like Facebook and Google and Big Brother, there's enough metadata to probably know most of your private life. On a side note, some municipalities are starting to get rid of red light cameras in favor of license plate scanners.  My local on/off ramp from Interstate 10 has them, and it always makes me uneasy knowing you can be tracked at any moment. Data isn't always secure, and we've seen instances of private data being abused after security breaches, Just imagine someone knowing your daily routine, what you look like, what you drive, when you drive, etc. 

 

It's unnerving to say the least.

plus was that like a big secret or something, like I mean you didn't know FBI kept civil biometric data?

because where I live we have a public service webpage where you can authenticate and look at what kind of data is stored in the biometrics data base - you can see the face image, date, place and reason it was gathered as well as information on when the  fingerprints where gathered and when was the record first stored and last updated, our government is pretty transparent about it, makes use of the data for civil needs like I already mentioned in previous posts

and I also might or might not be involved developing the biometrics system for the said government, so that might be a reason I'm pretty chill about it...

I don't see why this is an issue, 99.9% of people posted images of themselves on social media. I could make a facial recognition database right now using publicly available data...with better images too, driver's license pictures are always horrible...and out of date, mine was taken like 12 years ago. People should realize that when you make a fuss about the dumb things like this it makes legitimate privacy concerns, like mass surveillance, look less important than it is.

It is not the fact that there is a database functioning within the F.B.I. as much as the lack of trust for self serving officials in the USA.  If there was real transparency in their government, people would really get angrier on a larger scale.  There have been studies done that indicate that even if 100% of the US population wanted to do something politically... in full agreement... there would a much lower percentage in regard to the chance of it actually passing into law.  This is a direct result of the way legislature is currently passed.  

 

On the surface, representatives in the senate and congress act like they are public servants.  In reality, these guys and gals spend their days begging private entities for "donations" to their campaigns.  Ahhh, the life of a civil servant.  When private interests "donate" to a campaign, most of the time, they are looking for something in return.  Here's the catch, it is not considered corruption in most cases.  The laws have been twisted enough to allow politicians to advocate for their political integrity while really not having much of it.  So we have an ethically damaging level of corruption that has run rampant through the US system (happens up in Canada too, just hidden better because it is illegal).

 

Before I go off more, let me just say:  You guys lost out big by letting Bernie Sanders get away from you.  You may not agree with all of his policy ideologies, but man... he was going after this corrupt system with a vengeance.  They would have probably killed the man.  A little poison with his coffee or something.

 

To round out, the practice of collecting data is more beneficial than detrimental... except when that data is misused to do undue harm to innocent people.

 

Oh, I have to throw Trump shit in too:  Donald Trump made donations to the prosecuting team that was heading up the case against "Trump University".  I am talking tens of thousands of dollars. 

 

Imagine that:  I am being sued.  Let me donate money to the lawyers in charge of the case against me.

I'm not saying knowing every last thing is a good thing, and I like innocent until proven guilty, but them being able to make sure you are who you say you are seems pretty important to me. Just a heads up, I've only read bits of the previous posts, so I may be lacking a bit of context.
