i'm bottlenecking my pc what do i need to change ?

what do i need to upgrade in order to stop bottlenecking my pc ? i recently purchased a gigabyte GTX1080 G1 and have not noticed any difference in performances for example in arma 3 I'm only getting 40FPS on ultra settings. I changed it back to high settings but there was still no difference

GPU: gigabyte GTX1080 G1

CPU: Intel Core i5 6400 Skylake 2.7GHz 6MB

Ram: 8gb 

Power Corsair 550

Motherboard: ASUS H170M Plus LGA1151 DDR4 mATX

Your cpu is the problem here.

1. Get a i5 6500 (or i7 6700 if money is not an issue)

2. Get a Z170 and OC that 6400

Some motherboards still allow overclocking on Non-K cpu's

 

Your CPU is 2.7GHz and is not fast enough

My pentium is sorta faster than that at 4.3GHz

Get something like a i5-4690K+Z97 Motherboard+Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO to overclock

or if you want to stick to skylake

i5-6600K+Z170+Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO to overclock

ArmA 3 is a stupidly CPU heavy game.

Arma has always been nearly entirely cpu bound. 

Just to give you an idea of how much so, my 270X didn't bottleneck my overclocked 4790k until I moved up resolutions.

 

You need a faster cpu, your single-threaded performance is already top end, so the only performance increase you're going to get is from increasing clock speed on your cpu.

As of April 16. Make sure the motherboard you buy shows up on the list over at overclocking.guide, that site stores the BIOSes that you gotta flash in order to unlock BCLK overclocking on the i5-6400.

 

You can probably get a 60% overclock out of it, effectively turning it into an i5-6600K.

 

I don't recommend it to anyone not familiar with hardware. You'll have to flash a BIOS, then work with less diagnostic info than usual. You'll also have to get a good aftermarket cooler (since IIRC the BCLK unlock screws with temperature readings, a Hyper 212 EVO won't do. At least spend $50 on something that will cool it well).

Arma 3 doesn't care in the slightest about your gpu, it's the most cpu bound game out there that I know of.

Arma 3 runs like ass on many setups because it is way too CPU bound for what its worth (did someone say Team Fortress 2?). You basically need a heavy OC to get anywhere on Arma.

ARMA 3 just runs like ass in general. I pulled up some benchmark testing I did a while ago and the processor is never used more than 40%. And I have a hyperthreaded i7.

Arma 3 is most badly optimized game i ever had to taste look at GPU and CPU load it's ridiculous.

Apparently ARMA 3 is a very CPU intensive game. You could improve you fps somewhat by replacing the i5-6400 with an i5-6600 or an i7-6700.

If your replace the motherboard with a Z170 chipset model, you could get the K version of the 6600 or 6700 and overclock it. Don't forget to get at least a CM Hyper 212 cooler if you want to OC.

Overclocking the 6400 is not really worth it. Even if you could get a BIOS to allow you to do it, you'd be just as well off with a 6600.

 

Or, you could wait to see what Zen might do for you.

The CPU is definitely the #1 culprit but, if you're upgrading your CPU you may as well also grab another 8GB RAM (16 total) too. Most games won't need more than 8 but for those that do it will help. I have already found a few games that are pushing 10-12GB RAM usage (only 8-10 of which is the actual game).

This is the correct answer.

 

ARMA likes strong CPUs, and even taking that into consideration, it's got poor optimization. With a 390x and 4790k I get about 50-60+ on medium, and 50-60+ on max.
