Is There A Sane ISP Left?

I'll preface this by saying that we use AT&T and are located in Michigan.

So anyway...

Our data bill came in today and it basically said we have a data cap of 600GB and that, due to a "grace period", it wouldn't charge us this month for hitting 1,204GB. I'm assuming this means that the cap is a new implementation and they're giving us time to adjust (am I correct?), but in any event it does mean we don't want to continue using AT&T. Are there any ISP's left that don't have a cap?

 

And now to rant a little...

AT&T's service is terrible. It's slow, inconsistent, and forces you to rent out unreliable hardware for a compulsory bundle that most people don't even use. My gateway has crashed daily over periods of weeks, inexplicably stopping and starting again later, regardless of how many times it's replaced or upgraded or reconfigured. The speed drops whenever it feels like it, regularly slowing down to a momentary stop for no reason. We were already looking for a replacement because it's so bad.

And now they're going to make us pay nearly three times as much for the same service?!

There is no functional reason. It doesn't help with network congestion, there's no measurable cost to provide more data, they themselves have admitted on a few occasions that the only purpose is to make yet more money. Even if there were, the cost is unjustifiably absurd --It's $10 for 50GB. That's $200 a terabyte. It would be roughly a quarter the price to buy a 1TB hard drive and ship it out to a site host and back (both ways) to get the goddamn data.

Is there anything in the works to make this illegal? Because there should be. This is the exact reason we have regulations to limit monopolies, why ISP's are excepted is beyond me...

God I hope there's an alternative, because I don't want to give that damn company my business.

You can easily look up ISPs in your local area with a quick search.  I don't know if it's an exhaustive list as I don't have your location but I saw that Charter is in your area and while they have issues as well.  I don't think data caps are one of them.

Yes. But not in the US it seems :P

The whole situation at you guys is unreal and just stupid. I have had an unlimited data cap for as long as I can remember (and I remember having it for at least 7 years) and maybe we had no data cap here for longer! The speeds are alright here.

 

But when I  look at the USA, I'm just struck with a "WTF"-feeling. Your ISP's are so weird with how they do stuff... And with weird I mean they just want your money and the government's money and not make their infrastructure any better.

No there isn't. Honestly there isn't. Century Link is my ISP and they just don't care. They sell me 10Mb/s I get 750Kb/s and they said they just needed to upgrade my box on my house so I can get the speeds. That was 4 years ago....  Trust me I have called and called and they said oh yes the local internet expert will be there tommorrow. That went on for about 4 months and I just gave up. Did I mention I am hooked up to fiber too? I asked about this recently and they said it would cost $30K for them to hook it up and I would get 100Mb/s. I would have dumped Century Link by now except they are the only ISPs in my town. MONOPOLY!!!! IT IS STUPID

But when I  look at the USA, I'm just struck with a "WTF"-feeling. Your ISP's are so weird with how they do stuff... And with weird I mean they just want your money and the government's money and not make their infrastructure any better.

I feel like the only reason there are no data caps here in the netherlands or anywhere in europe for that matter is because the EU will start F***ing with an ISP if they make use of their monopoly to put data caps in place. The speeds are most certainly alright but there sadly isn't such a thing as google fiber :(

ISPs have even come out and said that they only put in place data caps for the money pretty much. Frontier has said they will never implement data caps although I don't know if you have them in your area. Time Warner also doesn't have caps and I'm not sure about Charter.

I'm in southern MI and we have charter and frontier available in town(Coldwater) both of which have unlimited data. I use charter at my work and frontier at home because I live out in the country. been fairly happy with them for the last 4 years or so.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

Yeah my school has gigabit and is connected to copper WHILE I HAVE FIBER!!! It is also a major connect from Chicago to somewhere else so speeds are up to 20Gb/s but they would never allow me that.

The whole situation at you guys is unreal and just stupid. I have had an unlimited data cap for as long as I can remember (and I remember having it for at least 7 years) and maybe we had no data cap here for longer! The speeds are alright here.

there was a bill I think that passed for at lease fiber (Shitty FTTC but better than ADSL so can't complain) in like 95% of the country by like 2017 or something so many places are getting it now :) (funny how BT has the monoply in like 30% of the country as Virgin (the only other ISP that uses it's own lines) doesn't have their cables everywhere. To be fair, they use fiber and Coaxial cables vs phones only or fiber plus phone).

Yeah, frontier is only a dsl service so your milage will vary depending on how old the local phone terminals, exchanges, and such are.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

I sincerely hope that the FCC can finally push through classifying ISPs as a public utility.  If they can do that, we might finally get good internet country wide.  However, then it'll have other issues. :)

My gateway has crashed daily over periods of weeks, inexplicably stopping and starting again later, regardless of how many times it's replaced or upgraded or reconfigured. The speed drops whenever it feels like it, regularly slowing down to a momentary stop for no reason. We were already looking for a replacement because it's so bad.

And now they're going to make us pay nearly three times as much for the same service?!

There is no functional reason. It doesn't help with network congestion, there's no measurable cost to provide more data, they themselves have admitted on a few occasions that the only purpose is to make yet more money. Even if there were, the cost is unjustifiably absurd --It's $10 for 50GB. That's $200 a terabyte. It would be roughly a quarter the price to buy a 1TB hard drive and ship it out to a site host and back (both ways) to get the goddamn data.

Is there anything in the works to make this illegal? Because there should be. This is the exact reason we have regulations to limit monopolies, why ISP's are excepted is beyond me...

God I hope there's an alternative, because I don't want to give that damn company my business.

You can try Comcast, they dont cap in MI yet, but they do cap in other area's of the US. Caps are coming some time in the future, however it looks like they made the cap 1TB. Which isnt too too bad for the most part. Caps are a fact of life now. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Well until those ass holes in the halls of Congress remember who put them in office, then caps are a fact of life. Here in Romulus, We have Comcast. Although ATT owns the phone lines, they are in such bad shape that ATT can not even deliver the 6Mbps that they sell. So yeah, we have to bend over and take it. Now that the FCC has actually won a court battle, that gives us a little firepower to use, however these companies will appeal the decision until they are blue in the face or until it hits the US Supreme court which is down a justice. Again because those ass holes in the hall of congress wont do their job. Plus the Supreme Court stated they would not take any cases until they are hole again. So again we are stuck between a Republican and a Democrat. Which basically means we are stuck between the party of bad ideas and the part of no ideas.

Just because we have no immediate avenue to force change doesn't mean we should simply deal with it. If you can't push and shove, you scream and pout.

 

Honestly, though, if we are to delve into the government side, the data caps are the least of our problems. Everyone who's supposed to be effectively and logically running things is so inept and corrupt that they're just a vehicle for greedy bastards to screw everyone over. That means oil, healthcare, military, and a host of other utterly massive problems...

Unfortunately the Government is involved in the internet. Dont forget that the US military effectively invented its origins. The only way these policies about caps change is if State or Federal authorities get involved. Because we cant vote with our wallets. Simple as that. Now when Comcast brings Data caps to the metro Detroit area I will be filing a complaint with the State of Michigan, on the grounds that there meter is subject to the same protections as other meters services. Such as Gas pumps, scales at the store for products by weight, Water Meters, Gas Meters and Electrical meters all have to be correct. Maybe when Companies like Comcast have to jump through each states legal process for these matters, then they will give the meters up. Plus there is the fact that Universities have discovered that Verizon's usage meter on their cellular service is not correct. The fact that Comcast uses a metering system that is not real time. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
