So it looks like WWDC 2016 is upon us, and starts soon! We'll probably be getting a lot of new software like watch OS 3, Mac OS X 10.12, maybe iOS 10, and more tvOS! We may get some hardware (maybe the new Mac laptops since those are overdue) but it isn't certain. You can tune in here: http://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2016/

or if you have crap Internet or don't want to watch the event live (idk why you wouldn't but ok), you can watch a live blog here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10415/apple-wwdc-2016-keynote

Stuff we found out:

Watch OS 3:

Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10421/apple-announces-watchos-3

Quote

At an OS level, the rather painful loading screens seen in previous iterations of watchOS are now dead, which is a fairly massive improvement. I’m not sure what architectural changes happened here yet, but it’s likely that offloading more compute onto the watch and periodic refresh of app data on the watch, along with more advanced multitasking is a fairly critical part of making all of this happen. It’s likely that this will have a power impact, but given the user experience improvements I think this is likely to be an acceptable trade-off.

Other than this architectural change, there have been a number of changes to the UI. Rather than overloading Glances with both a control center and various other glances, it looks like the two have been separated to better mesh with how iOS works. Rather than placing contacts on the side button, it looks like a Dock for apps launches instead. Other UI changes include a simple swipe to change the watchface on the fly and improved notification handling to make interactions like replying to a message from the watch faster than before.

On the feature side, apps like Activity now feature a multiplayer component by allowing you to share your activity data with friends and family. Activity also supports wheelchair mode to allow for more widespread usability, and has a whole host of new algorithms designed to properly track activity for those that are wheelchair-bound. There’s also a Breathe app, which is supposed to make it easier for people to do deep breathing/meditative breathing, along with Home for remote control of smart home devices. There’s also support for in-app Apple Pay, Mac unlock with Watch proximity, and SOS mode to automatically call emergency services with a long hold of the side button. There’s also improved workouts, with the ability to set no time limit for a workout and automatic workout pausing based upon motion detection.

It's nice that Apple has added some nice improvements, such as highly improving launch times and adding cool new features like Scribble. Watchos3 sounds like a good OS, but considering not many people on ltt probably have an Apple Watch.... Most of you probably don't care much about this :D

tvOS:

New features coming: I will link an article later too!

macOS Sierra (they changed the name from OS X to macOS):

Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10422/apple-announces-macos-sierra

Quote

But before we even get to features, let’s first talk about naming. Originally launched in 2001 as Mac OS X (and OSes before that going by Mac OS since 1996), in 2012 Apple unexpectedly dropped the “Mac” part of the name, leaving just OS X. This shortened name has always been somewhat odd, especially as later Apple OS projects for the Watch and Apple TV have standardized on [product]OS naming. So to bring the Macintosh OS back in line with the rest of the company’s OS names, what’s old is new again, and the OS is now macOS. With the return of the Mac, gone instead is the X, which originally signified the difference between Mac OS X and the original, classic Mac OS. But with Mac OS X set to outlive classic Mac OS as of next year, the differentiation is somewhat unnecessary at this point.

Meanwhile in keeping with their mountainous codenames, this latest version of macOS will be Sierra, presumably named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Like the past couple of releases, Apple isn’t using an official version number in their public materials, but developer materials confirm that this will carry the expected 10.12 version number.

Quote

The marquee feature addition for macOS Sierra then is without a doubt Apple’s Siri personal assistant software, which has been a staple of iOS for a number of years now. As you’d likely expect, macOS version behaves almost identically to the iOS version, bringing over most of Siri’s iOS functionality, including scheduling, app automation/activation, and searching. Mixed with that is support for macOS’s desktop centric drag & drop functionality, as Apple wants to make sure that Siri is as much a part of macOS as it is iOS.

There are a crap ton of features added in Sierra, so I want quote all of them. If you want see all of them, you can read the entire Anandtech article linked above. The biggest feature with Sierra, though, is probably Siri. It'll be interesting to see how well Siri integrates with macOS. There are some other features like a storage optimizer that will clear out junk on your Mac to open up storage which, as said above, you can find out more about in the article above.

iOS 10:

Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10420/apple-announces-ios-10-continued-refinement

Quote

To start, the lock screen, notification system, and 3D Touch on apps have been redesigned. With the lock screen, a number of people complained that TouchID was too fast on the iPhone 6s, which made the lock screen only visible for maybe a few hundred milliseconds before it was flashed off to something else. With iOS 10, the lock screen is automatically shown when motion sensors detect that you’ve raised the phone, similar to the Apple Watch.

Quote

While initial launch of the iPhone 6s didn’t really integrate a huge amount of functionality into 3D Touch when using the gesture on app launch, with iOS 10 the same gesture now integrates widget-like functionality that allows you to quickly peek into apps to see relevant information about them without actually launching the app.

Quote

The other changes here include Siri, Apple Maps, Home, and Messages, which now have third party app integration. Additionally, Apple Maps has the ability to see traffic, dynamic zoom, live traffic, and destination prediction. The Home app allows for easy control of all HomeKit enabled smart home devices, and Messages has a whole host of new features regarding emoji suggestions, effects, third party stickers and apps, deep linking, handwriting, and “invisible ink” for messages that have to be swiped to be revealed. For the most part these features are nothing life-changing, but should be good for quality of life improvements for those on the platform already. Apple Pay is also now enabled on the web to enable fast payment with iOS devices.

Overall, iOS 10 is a decent step up, but for the most part like the smartphone market itself it appears to be a mostly incremental release. Outside of design changes and improving 3D Touch usability, most of the changes are to add extensibility and enable third party apps to integrate into the OS better than before. The other changes here would be what I would call app-level changes, things like the addition of voicemail transcription, redesigned news, music, and maps apps. It’s not likely that users will find any particular reason to switch that they didn’t have before, but iOS continues to gain refinement and stays current with iOS 10.

iOS 10 seems to be a very 3D Touch centered update. For everyone out there with a 6s or 6s plus, this will probably be a welcome update. It has been known that in iOS 9 3D Touch didn't really have that many uses. Apple seems to want that to change with iOS 10. There aren't that many other new features with iOS 10, though one of the big ones is the redesigned notification screen. iOS 10 doesn't seem to be a huge update for most users, though.

Because it uses Apple's HTTP Live Streaming technology (according to the little note below the video screen) which isn't supported by Chrome or Firefox apparently.

I know, I read that message, but it's a bit ridiculous that Apple would create their own web streaming standard instead of using one of the current existing ones. Lots of people who are on older versions of Windows won't be able to watch it.

only good thing i got out of this four hours is Swift playgrounds. Not something i would use personally, i would love to simply get Xcode on iOS at least just the code editor, that can "magically"TM sync with your mac without wires or cables and do the compiling there but still, neat nonetheless

watchOS, didn't give a fuck

iOS just made want to stick to Android for another year

tvOS, not giving a fuck either

macOS: nothing interesting and making me think that my current macbook pro will truly be my last Mac

So overall the conference was a snoozefest as big as Microsoft E3 conference and a huge disappointment on the only thing from Apple that i love (or loved at this point) and that it's time for me to look for greener pasture even there.

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 12 years later: It's finally coming!!! I don't care anymore
