Samsung S7 Selfie Camera WTF?!!?

Hi guys, I just bought the Samsung S7 phone for my girlfriend,

as "the best phone" on the market at the moment.

WOW We're disappointed :o.

There is something majorly wrong with the selfie camera.

When you turn the phone downwards, you forehead becomes gigantic.

Turn it upwars, your face looks like a moai statue.

Welcome to the world of fish-eye wide angle lenses. It's not a faulty phone, they're all like that. Linus even mentioned it in today's video, the review of the LG G5. Either learn to live with it or return the phone and get something else.

Pull it farther from your face as to reduce the effect the fisheye lens has. Then crop afterwards if your subject is too small in the original photo.

Yup, everyone has already explained that it's a very wide angle lens.  It's common knowledge (at least among photographers) that when doing portraits, you actually want to be rather far away and zoom in with something like a 70 - 200mm in order to compress the facial features and avoid the nose-bulge syndrome, but obviously that's not possible on a phone 2 feet from your face.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I think she has. It's in the lens itself :( So disappointing.

You could try processing the image to convert from the fish eye effect to a rectilinear projection.  It may help you avoid the nose bulge, but be aware that features near the edge of the image will be stretched instead and may lead to a case of alien-forehead xD

I don't know any off the top of my head but I'm sure there are free tools for it.  I'm pretty sure that photoshop/camera raw/lightroom can do this inherently as part of the lens distortion correction feature, but those are expensive of course and may not have a profile for your lens, meaning you'd need to play with sliders to get the right effect.

Yes, it's called a fish eye lens, the G5 doesn't have it.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it. :P

Did they not include a feature to account for lens distortion or am I just thinking of Photoshop?

I'll check my S7 tomorrow.

Top right there is a "effects" option.  It has a face correction option.  Doesn't correct as much as I hope but it seems good at doing a bit!

I already found this, and applied it. and as you mentioned. it doesn't seem to be doing as much as we hoped for either.
