Linus has no degree and neither does Luke iirc.

 

If you expect there to be a degree on how to assemble computers, you'll be sorely disappointed. Computer engineering generally refers to software engineering and has very little to do with designing hardware. What you're looking for it electronic engineering, but you'll only get to design computer parts if you get hired by a computer hardware company (obviously) which means you could end up doing something like designing elevator control units. It's also a very difficult degree to tackle, make sure you're determined if you decide to go for it.

 

If you just want to learn how to build a computer, watch LTT regularly and you'll be pretty much just as qualified as they are, and maybe try to get a job at something like ncix where they'll most likely teach you what you are missing in the first week.

If i remember correctly linus did general studies or some english thing and bailed hard early on

 

I did Software Engineering then moved to comp sci because I was horribly mislead and made a terrible decision(read: shoulda stayed in soft eng)

 

I then tried to do some computer systems degree crap becuase i was unhappy with compsci.. bailed on that 1 term before my degree because I wanted to pursue this job(read: yolo)

A bit of friendly advice, be very weary of overestimating yourself. Most people can learn things very quickly if they're interested and given your age and the topic of discussion, I very much doubt what you do is "too much" for someone else in the same situation. Sure, someone else may take a little longer to understand how something works, but until you start talking semiconductors and MOS-based logic gates you haven't even tasted what the hard stuff is like. Be prepared to do a lot of logic if you're planning to study hardware design. Logic is a hit or miss thing for a lot of people. I would know because I was terrible at logic courses but faired well in programming ones. Seems to be a normal trend within my institution.

That's interesting. I'm quite the opposite, at least in my self directed studies. I find programming astronomically hard (that's what attracts me to it), while I find logic circuits as simple as defining the problem that needs to be solved.

Bit of inquiries on my part, in computer science you thought you could do stuffs like VLSI design, but that wasn't the case for the degree you moved into? Or was it something else entirely which made you regret that choice?

Linus doesn't have one and neither does luke. I think luke may have or is going to finish his degree but they took a big risk. Linus has learned all his stuff by doing it and learning as he goes

Absolutely, but logic-specific courses focus a lot on theory and strict definitions so it is conceivable that someone good at programming would struggle in those classes. Most sciences and technical skills are strongly based on logic, but being good at one doesn't automaticallty make you good at the rest.
