Upgrade: 8350 to intel, or sli the 970 ???

marvin12
Go to solution Solved by LabRat,

do better than the 970. my next card will have 8gigs of vram and be faster than what I have.......... and may even cost less.

i'm not sure where these games sit cpu wise.

if you know where the Wolfenstein game sits or BBC2 or FarCry3 in relation to your games listed......... i don't have problems running these maxed out. Only reason I( mentioned these is because I started going through my library last month and played for the first time in a long time. working my way up to Crysis ( something ) again.

I'll edit this again....... if you do rebuild the platform this year, go with intel. I have an intel machine that will embarrass amd to the hilt. If you're going to wait until next year I would weigh my options with the new AMD cpu's to come.

Hi Everyone!

I am planning to upgrade my system soon.

Here are my current specs:

Motherboard: msi gaming 970

Processor: amd 8350 @4.5 ghz

Gpu: palit gtx 970

PSU: m12II 620w psu

Ram: 8gb 1866 ddr3

Primary: samsung 850 evo 250gb ssd

Secondary: 1tb wd blue 7200rpm hdd

I need everyone's opinion for which upgrade path to go in terms of more FPS GAIN/STABILITY....

option 1: upgrade 8350 to intel (4690k/4790k/6600k/6700k).. i know motherboard and the ram will also be replaced if i am to go skylake with this option.. = more $$$ :(

option 2: buy a 2nd gtx970 for sli then wait and check how zen will perform.. = a lot less of $$$ :)

I now play on 1080p 60hz tn panel but stuttering annoys me if I put the settings at high to ultra..

also, there will be a chance that I will upgrade to 144hz or 60hz ips monitor someday if the results of my upgrade will be remarkable and proves that I can go above 80s to 100++ at ultra...

so.... Option 1 or 2 or something else???

What is the Point of buying a new 970 now ? 1070/1080 are like right arround the corner. Same goes to the RX 480 which will cost 200$ and releases at the End of this Month if im right

If you are on a budget, option 2. if not, option 1

unfortunately, gtx970 is what i have right now.. the cost of buying a 2nd 970 is not that a lot compared to buying a new 1080/1070.. also 1080/1070 will more likely be bottlenecked by my 8350??? not sure but that's my idea..

stuttering could be the card more than the cpu. but at 1080p I have a machine with an 8300 and a 970 on it and everything seems to play fine.

what are  you p,laying?

what kind of shape is your internet connection?

what are you streaming from........ steam/uplay/origin?

or is this gaming done without internet?

I mostly play offline as my internet is not that reliable as of the moment where I live... :(

mostly AAA titles like gtav, blackops,bf4,dragon age inquisition, darksouls3 etc.. and any games that will soon be released..
do u think, going with SLI will make more sense in my scenario?

i actually don't play any of those games. and i have no idea if there would be a vram issue or not. did you make adjustments to shadow and motion blur or AA at all?

yes.. and I also have to lower other settings as well just for the game to run buttery smooth.. I mean, I know how to deal with it. it's just that, i don't want to lower most of the important settings in the game that will make my ego say "I'm such a loser"..

Weird. I max out every games details not using 8xaa obviously but 4xaa is still easy to drive if the game has the options.. my 970 is at stock clocks and dont see stuttering at 1080p whatsoever. I maximize every game and The card chews 1080p performance.

I play mostly popular titles and some not so popular. I try a bit of everything..

Considering your after more performance.. Id go with Endermans suggestion though.

Sli 970s would have you really questioning your choice if the processor is creating blips now with a single. (If thats the case)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

At 4.5GHz you will be fine for most games so adding more GPU power would be nice! But SLI/Xfire is not really advised at this point unless you want it for DX12 or Vulkan... :(

Upgrade your CPU. The GTX970 is still a fine card. Going further, I would ignore the recommendations to upgrade your GPU and skip this generation of cards altogether. I guarantee something like a 6700k will be relevant long after the GTX1070.
If you stick with the same SKU of graphics horsepower, the '70 series of what comes after the 1070 will be aimed squarely at you. It's how nVidia does business.

CPU upgrade because sli is such a bad idea, single gpu will always have less issues. Upgrade to 1070 later this year for very significantly fps improvement (90+ FPS maxed out any game atm at 1080p because it has 1920pixel cores /j )
